I ordered   the following parts

a nice metal case from amazon
1 rasp pi
10 pack of mirco sd card with a read/write device

1 good case

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LZ3I5R4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=11 rasp pi

1 rasp pi

https://www.amazon.com/Raspberry-Model-A1-2GHz-64-bit-quad-core/dp/B01CD5VC92/ref=pd_sim_147_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=HR61RVA7Z2NQ9885EV3K

10 blank cards with a read /write device included

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01BDZW34Q/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

a single card

10 pack of cards with a read/write

shots below show how I cloned the oem micro sd to a blank card
I had an eight gb oem card and I used 16 gb blank cards.
I used hdd raw copy tool
http://www.hddguru.com/software/HDD-Raw-Copy-Tool/

first step  was pull original 8gb card and stick it in the new rasp pi then check to be sure new rasp pi was working!

the rasp pi and the case

heat sinks and screws

it was a peel n stick heatsink

this is a peel n stick heat sink

second heat sink attached and I am screwing the rasp pi into the metal case.

notice the hdmi is lined up as is the power in usb port

fully attached

top of case

micro sd card end

plate gets attached but a little loosely so that you can line up other end

other side other plate also attach loosely
then tighten both plates evenly boom it is built!  under 15 minutes

Thanks for the great guide Phil. I'm sure it was a hell of a lot cheaper than the 100$ they want for there controller. Toss in a pair of good ol anker usb cables and a one of there 2 port USB bricks to power the thing and your off an running.

Having only mined GPU, am I correct in understanding you can use a generic Rasp Pi like this and pre-load software to control, say an Avalon 741 in order to save some cash?

Are you planning on expanding to include the software preload for various miners ?

I have an Rpi 2 sitting in a box somewhere not to mention the cash I had planned for Vega cards....are the Avalon's readily available?

Yep, Avalon also uses a RPI for controllers but they do provide a nice simple guide on how to setup a RPI for mining yourself. Avalons are pretty much always available and they ship pretty quickly, quality is also much better than from Bitmain. Only difference is less hashrate and slightly worse efficiency.

yeah  I suggest  buying an avalon rasp pi and build a spare one.  if you have multiple avalon 741's

also the rasp pi  has  other mining setups.

I suggest the larger  micro sd card the 16gb.

and if you are running a ton of rasp pi's  here is a great power source.  for up to 5 rasp pi's

https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Charge-Charger-PowerPort-PowerIQ/dp/B01IUTIUEA/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1503256820&sr=8-3&keywords=anker+5+port+charger

with 5 good cables  will run and run and run

https://www.amazon.com/Anker-5-Pack-PowerLine-Micro-USB/dp/B015XPQ5KK/ref=sr_1_1?

if you are running 2 rasp pi's  this is good

https://www.amazon.com/Anker-2-Port-Charger-PowerPort-PowerIQ/dp/B01LCDJ7LG/ref=sr_1_1?

no  I only have  avalon software.  I made  2 spare rasp pi 3's  and I cloned 4 spare cards.

I was hoping others would post other mining software images to use for other miners.
