Another alt-coin? alternative mining with computational chemistry

With so many alt coins on the block, most of them will no doubt end up nothing more than time-wasters. For sure the last thing people need at this moment is yet another alt-coin.
However, I am seriously thinking about starting a bitcoin clone utilizing a more environmental-friendly mining algorithm. Instead of wasting electric power in computing hashing functions, the proposed coin will be mined while searching for new molecules based on a quantum chemistry method.
Any suggestions about this? non-starter or worth a try?

it can be a nice idea, adding an economic incentive in exchange for other people computing cycles ...

There are nice ideas regards distributed computing ..

I remember in 90's when we tried to crack RC cipher (for free and ideology only  Grin )...

I think you have a really good idea. Mining is definitely a waste of energy.
You could use boinc platform to implement your new coin... I used it for Ripple as well!

Thanks everyone for the comments and the advice.

With bitcoin 2017 fork behind us, is NOW the right time to fork off the bitcoin core and make a clone alt coin?

In this alt coin, I am planning to separate mining from transaction verification: the block validation works same way as in bitcoin, except that no new coins will be awarded for the legacy 'mining', the only income of the old miner is  the transaction fee of the block.

The actual mining will be moved into a mining block, whereby 50 coins will be awarded to those who mine the block by identifying a new molecular structure for this particular block. Just now sure how viable this process will be... Smiley
