I was told in another thread that the above error meant that my CPU couldn't handle the version number 0.96.1
So I downgraded to 0.96.0 which I had running previously on the same computer before the upgrade. See below for version numbers.

After install, I still get the above error! Didn't used to before which I can be sure of as I have 0.96.0 on an offline machine. Although that one mysteriously is a beta version which i didn't realise until I checked the version number 0.96.0-beta-a3dO1aa722.
Not sure if this is relevant? Or Im using a sensible version on my offline?. Although its likely I had this beta version on the online machine too as I would have just used the same download.

Now I cant find this beta version anywhere online. Is that what I need? (that beta version) to get it running on the online machine and talking to the offline? or is there something else im missing to do with the above error in the title?

2nd question:
what is the difference between the 2 files:
Armory 0.96.0 for Ubuntu/Debian 64-bit with GCC 4.7
Armory 0.96.0 for Ubuntu/Debian 64-bit with GCC 5.3

I checked gcc and I have 6.3 so does that mean I need Armory 0.96.0 for Ubuntu/Debian 64-bit with GCC 5.3 or 4.7?

I get the error in the title with both these files after install. Fyi, I do a full remove with --purge before installing anoter and its a frsh install of Linux.

Why is there no info on te git site? Why am I so confused? Help!

You need to build from source for the configure script to disable all the ASM stuff you CPU cannot handle. No way around it atm. GCC 4.7 builds are for Debian users.
