There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, which will follow the rules of the network no matter what miners do. Even if every miner decided to create 1000 bitcoins per block, full nodes would stick to the rules and reject those blocks.

Welcome to the forum Good luck getting an ASIC! I would spend some time reading about BFL on bitcointalk before placing an order, you'll be in for a looooong wait. Might be better waiting for the next available batch from Avalon.

Asic is too risky. I still think that buying gpus is okay, since you can actually sell them, while I can imagine that ASICs will lose their value in a year.

I feel FPGA chips are the way to go if you can get one relatively cheaply rather than spend money on an ASIC machine you might not get for a year, only reason I haven't jumped into the queue, don't know how long the wait will actually be. I wonder if there's any updates on that by the way...

I was seriously considering buying one as well until I read around here about the long waits So I put my money into ASICMiner shares, already paying off

I too was interested in asic but then found out its a pipe dream. Just made my first rig with a 7970, slightly overclocked its hashing at 580

Yep, I invest here https://www.havelockinvestments.com where you can buy 1/100th of a share in ASICM, currently trading at around BTC0.02. I bought about 50 at 0.014 about a week ago. Havelock is good as its a super simple interface, and there are no trading fees. Only a 0.0010 (i think) withdraw fee. Check out this thread for info on the ASIC Miner https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=99497.0

Best bang for buck , hash/watt ratio and card price.
Gigabyte 7950 undervolted, my opinion tho gpu in bitcoin will be shortly lived, but can target other alt coins
