The difficulty on BT3 (Bitcoin Testnet version 3- included in every normal bitcoin client) has risen very dramatically. There was a lot of talk at the conference of using Testnet as an altcoin where we can experiment with features and ideas that can be directly applied to Bitcoin to make bitcoin stronger/better. Even on the Bitcoin mailing list there is talk about the need of a 'staging' arena for bitcoin. In the meantime the difficulty has jumped dramatically to 230!

Check out details about BT3 here:

And the block explorer for testnet here:

Do you know of any Testnet pools?

I'm still learning about cryptocurrencies so not in a position to use them yet, but will eventually need some Testnet coins.

I'm not sure if there is a testnet mining pool, but I think if you ask existing pool operators for Bitcoin Testnet support they will help out by starting a pool for sure.
