If power consumption isn't an issue, is it worth my time to power up an old laptop and have it CPU mining? It's only like 5 years old so it's not a great CPU.
The laptop is pretty much dead to me anyway so I don't mind if it's quickly killed by the process.
**Edit/Conclusion: Not worth it**

Not worth your while for BTC but if energy isn't an issue and your not worried about burning out your laptop then maybe pool mining LTC is an option. Don't expect to get rich though.

Waste of energy at least, I don't like when people think it's "just for free", because their parents pay it or whatever. Unless it's a renewable energy source of course.

Still not worth the time. You can measure the hash rate after you install a bitcoin client, but then you will see that it will take years to generate a BTC with a CPU.

if you have free electricity and free or hardware that you use in other places or old hardware then you can always befit. that being said you will not have a very efficient rig and wont get much money but if you don't care then have fun.

Probably not worth your time/effort if you're looking at it in a fiscal sense. If you're just looking to experiment/play around it might be a place to start. You won't make money off of it, but you might learn something about Bitcoin mining and Bitcoin in general.

Electricity is never free. Someone along the line is paying for it and you have no right to waste their money.

My name was simply a play on "Blue Engineer" from Team Fortress. I am not affiliated with Microsoft or the Azure project.

I like how people use to mistakenly equate renewable and free.

the thing is... is you buy one of those boards for 200/300$ with 2-4GHs, you would get return of your money in less than one month?

I like how people use to mistakenly equate renewable and free. I know it's still not free, because you still have to create the solar panels or whatever to harvest the energy. But it's at least less of a waste. Once the e.g. solar panels have created more energy than work/energy is used to create them + the work needed to recycle them, then you can call it "free energy". But yes, shouldn't have it expressed this way, my bad.

Don't waste your time mining, the amount of money for the CPU plus the electrical usage is not worth it...

You will propably get something like 5 mega-hashes / sec. I have already tried with an old computer. You can : - Mine for 5 years with your laptop, win 50$
- Sell the laptop 50$
Same result, no wait
