I'm not a day trader - in it for the long term.
How can I convince myself not to keep looking at the market charts multiple times per day?

This is a pretty normal behavior pattern for a trader. Just ground yourself and remember that long-term is a very different time frame than the short-term and that nothing is decided inalterably, completely and thoroughly in the dynamics of the day. Try to refocus on other responsibilities. It takes some time to adjust ti, but it works

Why did you do it? Why you cannot control yourself looking the chart? Maybe that is a sign. Why not make a positive thing out of that compulsiveness. Why not become a day trader, there is a possibility that you will become a good strategist on day trade.

I think it is completely fine to check the charts again and again. Everyone involved in the crypto trading will have such kind of behaviour. Even me as a trader or little but dragged person into new coin investing will keep looking for charts every time.

I'm sure that the price might not have gone up when I have already looked into it an hour before or something similar.

It's a good habit though as it will help you grasp the market situation and you will learn the patterns too.

Why do you feel you need to stop checking the charts? Is it negatively impacting, interfering with your life in some way? Are you worried you'll make a rash sell decision based on moment-in-time price and emotional response?

The price of Bitcoin has some wild swings. It would make sense to check the price frequently to see what side of the trend line we're on.

Getting a coin alarm. Just put in at which prices you want to be notified and you will get a notification whenever bitcoin/altcoin hits the specific price. This should help you out.

Delete all bookmarks for Bitcoin price sites like coinmarketcap.com, avoid or severely limit your visits for Bitcoin news sites - that information is mostly junk or so old that it has no impact on the price by the time you would read it. Try to read news only once or twice per day. Avoid situations that lead to procrastination - always keep yourself occupied with something productive. Also just learn to not care about the price - set yourself a goal to sell at some point (like 20k or 50k) or after some time (5 or 10 years for example).

It's actually a bad habit if you aren't a trader (like OP) and just want to hodl for a long term. It causes unnecessary worrying, wastes time and leads to even more useless procrastination.

Find something else to do on your computer/mobile device (wherever you are checking the charts from) so as to keep you occupied and not even thinking about the charts.]
Set a "virtual HODL date" in your mind until which you are not allowed to sell your holdings. That might get you to think "no reason to look at the charts as I can't act anyways".

At the end of the day it's not a bad thing to look at the charts as long as you don't make bad decisions.

Just buy some coin that you can use to day trade when you still keep the one coin for the long term
Make the other coin as a distraction so you are not to be tempted to bother with your long term coin

So why stop if you're having so much fun and it's not harmful?   Seriously, you could be doing a lot of worse things.

I tend to do this as well, not only with bitcoin but with stocks too.  Gives me something to do, and both things are hobbies of mine.  It's not hurting anyone and it doesn't consume me like an addiction.   It ain't broke so I'm not trying to fix it.

Nothing's bad with checking the charts frequently. I used to do that too when I was still trading altcoins. I just can't help myself from looking. I think it is fine as long as your decisions will not be easily affected by your emotions if ever there are some swings with the bitcoin price. Just stop thinking about it every minute. Try to keep yourself busy from doing some other stuff. If you're really curious about it then make a regular schedule when to check it, maybe 3-5 times a day and then try to lessen it gradually to 2-3.

Get busy for yourself, if you are a trading or let say an investor since you are into long term investment then you should go out and find something that will make you busy like finding a regular job which will consume almost all your hours in your daily life so you will almost forgot about your investment and you will not be able to check the charts.

Why do you want to convince yourself for not watching the charts ?

It is pretty normal thing to do and you can learn many types of behaviour of the coin or the related ICO project progress. Along with the charts I will suggest you to invest your time in learning what is market capitalism and trade volume for that particular coin/chart. This is fruitful information which gives you information regarding the coins future and this will ultimately tell you whether to invest the money or not.

You aren't a day trader but you keep looking at the charts everytime? Just keep your minds off it except you are a trader that holds by buying at dips and selling when the value increases. Even with that, you can just set your sell point and move on with your daily activities. It all depends on you and the activities that warrants you to keep looking at the charts anyway at the end.

You dont have to, if you dont want to. Since I enter to this cryptos world, Checking a market and price become habits. I dont force my self to do it, but because I want to. If you planting some plants, dont you wanna see its growing every day. Or if its withered, dont you wanna know whats happening and why thats happen?. you're a long term investor, I think maybe you dont want to check it everyday, because if you do it, you'll have feeling will lost money if the price dump ,isn't it? If that so, good luck to find a way to convince yourself.

Before buying the chart check is very important, and why you are doubtful about it, because by monitoring the chart before you can see whether the coin will go up or not .. And I think that's the way traders to choose altcoin

It's more of a psychological issue on your part since you are invested and you have money in bitcoin. Believe me, I've been in the same spot as you are and it's really hard to avoid checking on the price every now and then. The best thing you can do is to try to divert your attention into something else that takes your time e.g. playing video games or reading books.

That is must thing that traders do before going for any trade. Chart check gives a random idea about situations about values. And we can predict the future value. I also check it on daily basis because my trading id very intense. So going for any kind of trade without checking the value chart is like eating without teeth. That is really ridiculous.

As a trader that is not skippable because that is the behavior of traders, they are always checking the price so they can find a good entry or exit depending on their perspective. Checking charts for traders is not a bad thing because that is the only thing how traders can make more money.

I cant go 10 minutes without checking the charts. I have a real problem.  Embarrassed It would be better with the screen in my glasses because then I wouldnt be constantly looking down. I just need a feed in my brain so I can just think about bitcoin and automatically know the price. But the conspiracy could use that same chip to mind control me so its ultimately risky.

Same here. Because of this habit I lost lots of money always checking the charts constantly it gives you a false sense of reality of what is actually going to happen in the markets and you might sell before you should or buy too early or too late as a result. That happened to me many of times.

Maybe you can divert your attention to something that also interests you.
Make yourself busy, maybe in that way you can't sneek to the charts.
Also have a mind set that you're not a day trader so behave like a long term trader.
Well as for me, it's quite hard for me to do this as if like this is my habit. Grin
Every morning the first thing that I do is  to check my blockfolio so I can see what's up with crypto world.

you need to have another activity so your focus is not for the market charts, I have this experience before but fortunately I can search other thing so I am not looking at the market charts too often, maybe in one day, I only watch several hours a day. this is good for you as you said you want to safe for long term and I think you can try it.

Its like doing your home work. If you don't check the charts from time to time, you are keeping yourself out of whats happening to your money or investment, it not a bad habit but it actually shows that you want to make sure that you are on top of your business or investment. One more thing is you cant rely on what other people will say about your investment, you have to rely on your own findings.

You can't, no matter how much effort you tried. It was a natural characteristic of traders, even if you busy doing other thing, even how many peoples surround you, even while your sleeping. You keep going to your device and check for the current status of your precious coins.

The feelings are mutual.

Risk only an amount you don't care about. That's all, you won't keep looking the charts because it doesn't matter. If you only want to hold, then it's enough. Time will tell. It won't gain really high profit for you, but you won't be disappointed if anything goes against your position.

You need to take a break from bitcoin as a whole, including posting in here, reddit or any other place. I do that from time to time, get a month out and go get some sun, get some hobbies. It's good to take a break, specially when there's so much drama all the time in this community. Just be safe thinking that the Core devs continue making a good job and all the hardforking idiots are amateur players trying to compete against an NBA team with Kobe, Jordan and Durant all on the same team.

I think you just suggested the right remedy to cure this anxiety of checking charts. I feel the same way that long term  investors should just forget about their investments for a while and chill out there so that they return after a long while to check what's going on from time to time and not everyday or several times within a day.

Risk only an amount you don't care about. That's all, you won't keep looking the charts because it doesn't matter. If you only want to hold, then it's enough. Time will tell. It won't gain really high profit for you, but you won't be disappointed if anything goes against your position.

"Don't care about" might be not optimal, as people start caring about money pretty quickly - even hundreds of dollars are big enough to stop risking for many people. It's better think about investments in terms of worst case EV - lets say you can afford to lose $1,000 - then you invest $2,000 but promise yourself to sell if the price will go down 2 times lower from the one you've bought in. This will be much more profitable than investing $1,000, because you will have more coins in the first case. The downside of first method is that it is more likely that Bitcoin will drop 2 times than that it will drop to near zero, but I think the difference is not too big, because the chances that it will continue growing are much higher.

Lol, this is just a description of me.. It just happens to me every Sunday, that is my free day and i am here in my home the whole day, so i am in the computer almost the entire day.
And i check the charts at least 1 time per hour, i can not stop doing that, i think it is a TIC, just because i cant control it..
But during the week i just check the charts two times a day max, i dont use to see them usually.

It's such a bad habit. The suggestion of just setting an alarm for certain prices is a really good one but if you're like me, curiosity just gets the better of me and I like to keep my eye on the markets.

I'm not a day trader - in it for the long term.
How can I convince myself not to keep looking at the market charts multiple times per day?

You dont have to, if you dont want to. Since I enter to this cryptos world, Checking a market and price become habits. I dont force my self to do it, but because I want to. If you planting some plants, dont you wanna see its growing every day. Or if its withered, dont you wanna know whats happening and why thats happen?. you're a long term investor, I think maybe you dont want to check it everyday, because if you do it, you'll have feeling will lost money if the price dump ,isn't it? If that so, good luck to find a way to convince yourself.

I have the same problem. It is the first thing I do in the am and most evenings. I am also trying desperately to curb it. Sound advice.

I think to stop that very crazy habit all you have to do is to get yourself engaged in other fun activities as this would take off your mind from checking the stock chart and other stuff like that, it is a very bad habit so you better drop it.

It’s a normal thing for new traders or scared traders, you are probably just too bothered about your chances of
making profit or losing your money, but that shouldn’t bother you, you find other things to do get yourself busy.

I used to be like that, I guess curiosity and nerves plays a big part in it.

Just give it time and you will start losing interest slowly and only check every now and than whenever you remember or think about it.

Recently I started to sometimes do the same thing, but not every day. In 2014-2016 I was able to easily forgot about the price for months, but this year things became interesting. I'm a holder and mostly interested in finding an opportunity to buy more at the dips.

That was the most stupid behavior I picked up or put up when I was still learning how to trade, and I think it was due to the fact that I was nervous and was scared of losing my money to the market then since I was using my pocket money to trade at the early stages.

I have noticed that habit is one of the habit that most new traders pick up when trading, they keep on checking the chart like watching the chart is going to give them profit in the new second, they end up wasting precious time.

It is I must say like you developed a habit just like having a cup of tea every day in the morning and evening. It is good to know about what’s going on but you can have a look at the charts twice a week or so. This will serve the purpose in a good way. Checking it every day will just make you more worried.

belief is a symbol of trust. but anyway you see a graph like you play in forex. I think it is not much different. if you are more experienced of course you will know what step you are taking. it's all about knowledge and research. dont forget it takes patience.

for me, I dont really see the graph, I just follow the pattern of market and global development, then I make sure with the graph.

I don't see any problem in looking the charts multiple times per day, though maybe at some point if it becomes and urge and uncontrollable then maybe you should set a goal and a date when to check the market trends in that way it would be more exciting for you. Also try to focus on other factors in your investment aside from market charts like current events and news related to coins to divert your attention.

So far, 2017 has been full of surprises and we all are expecting more breaking news. If someone wants to get benefited from bitcoins then he must keep an eye on the changing prices or else he can skip a golden chance. However, there has not been much change in the prices for last 24 hours.

I think it's common, and commonplace. we are almost the same, always look at the graphics on the screen. really annoyed. but that's the human nature, I think there's always the fear and the desire to see up on the chart

I did that once too, even I am not a daytrader too. Remind yourself that charts are not everything there is in trading. Lots of news and stories affect the dumping and pumping of bitcoin. Tell yourself that you are holding that coin for a long term, it has a great project and I am holding it because I believe it will increase more in the following months. Just like a mantra LOL. Get yourself busy at reading things and other stuff and go away with your laptops or gadgets.  Roll Eyes Wink Grin

Just trust the process. Bitcoin value is so volatile that it might be hard to control yourself, but do keep in mind that it has always corrected and that it has survived this far and soared this high.

That's not to say don't check at all though. It would still be wise to check a few times every now and then. Just try not to obsess over it. You're in it for the long term, so today's dip likely won't matter to you a year or two from now.
