I received about $1200 USD worth of Bitcoins while engaged in internet commerce.  I needed some cash to pay a bulldozer operator.  I had never purchased any Bitcoins, so I did not have an online account to cash them out.  So I looked around for some options.  I found some local Bitcoin dealers on Craigslist http://www.craigslist.org/about/sites , and then noticed some of the same ones on LocalBitcoins.com https://localbitcoins.com/

I ended up contacting a dealer who was only about two miles away from me.  He sounded knowledgeable, confident, and was not "tricky" or evasive.  We arranged to meet in a "safe location" that had security cams and free WiFi.  I transferred my Bitcoins to an Electrum wallet on my laptop, and drove to meet him.  We met. I booted up my laptop, I connected to the WiFi, I showed him the Electrum balance, he counted out the hundred dollar bills on the table (which I politely did not touch), he emailed me his Bitcoin wallet address, I transferred the Bitcoins to his wallet while he was monitoring the block chain, and I picked up the money and left.

I had arrived in the future.

Thanks for sharing your story. I've traded on Localbitcoins several times and loved it, the built in escrow was great as well as the SMS code integration.

Somehow the fact that you needed to pay a bulldozer operator makes this story more interesting. It's like the old school meeting the new school in a good way.

What a shame you couldn't convince the bulldozer operator to accept payment in bitcoins.  I assume you at least asked?

It would be a true shame if he was willing to accept bitcoins, but neither of you thought to mention the possibility to the other.

That's great, hope that WDC will eventually allow the cryptocoins to arrive before he stopped counting the $$. That way the poor guy would not have to wait for the blocks to confirm (takes an hour sometimes).

That's a pretty cool idea...
First we need gamboy type trading cables that connect 2 USBs and a screen.

Not yet. You'll be there the day the bulldozer operator gladly accepts your bitcoins. Wink

Nice writeup, seemed to go smooth.

How did you decide the exchange rate? Did you agree to a price before, or during the actual sale? Also, which exchange rate did you use? Mt.Gox?
How many confirmations on the blockchain did he wait before he was satisfied?

Hand-to-hands are the way to do it... (just ask Stringer Bell)  Smiley

Sounds like the perfect opportunity for a cup of tea and a chat!
