Ripple is actually what drew me to these forums.  I'm deeply concerned that they are closed and centralized and seem to have a small number of very professional salesmen promoting them.

Has their been any talk about how they'll square with regulators?

Bitcoin is peer-to-peer so it can hide.  But a system like Ripple needs to be terrified, unless of course they ARE the regulators.

those are parts of our concerns as well.

i fear the public will be too bribed from the xrp they have been given (todays value, some people received over 5btc worth of ripple for free) to care about the cost.

because of this im wondering why anyone would ever be willing to pay 1 USD for XRP.

If you think the market value of all ripples is greater than 100 billion dollars, then it makes sense to pay 1 USD per XRP. Considering that they were giving away 40000 to anybody who asked, for free, I just do not see XRP as ever being worth that much. I could be wrong.

If you think about the Ripple system, and the way it allows credit between peers and transfer of value across the globe, I am sure you will be able to come up with some situation in which it could potentially be useful. Just like with Bitcoin, as more people have creative ideas the possible use cases will only increase.

Maybe you should do some reading about LETS systems and the concepts behind Ripple, and then come to this particular implementation of Ripple. Imagine a situation where you are in a poor neighborhood, there are a bunch of unemployed people and nobody has any money. These people have lots of time on their hands and could be doing things for each other, but since they don't have money they can't pay each other. Now imagine they start using ripple, now even though they don't have money they can start trading using the IOUs and jump start their local economy. Or something like that.

Go into the Ripple Client, go to "advanced", then "trade", set your currency issuer to "Bitstamp" (I think the address is around somewhere ...), then create an offer to buy BTC or USD for XRP, after that fills you can withdraw the BTC or USD to Bitstamp.

Ripple is software, it can't square with regulators anymore than Bitcoin can. Gateways/exchanges need to do this. OpenCoin (the company that is in charge of distributing XRP) says they are working hard with gateways on regulatory issues. Time will tell.

IF Ripple continues to walk a path of success, then $1 XRP in one year seems plausible. If Ripple isn't useful then the value of XRP could probably tank all the way down close to zero within one year. It's not really a safe(ish) store of value like BTC, because it doesn't have the same level of adoption, and the validation network is small. When they open source their software I think the network will grow massively overnight.

I'd say the price of XRP is a boom of bust thing over the next 12 months. I drank the kool-aid and bought a few recently. I think it's a world-changing disruptive technology that compliments Bitcoin, not just "a good gamble".

Can't I care about both? I like to make money, and I like cryptocurrencies which help keep that money free (as in freedom).

Again people are getting paid BTCs for 6-7k XRP right now, if you got these free and you think these are a scam, then doesnt that make you a scammer?  

I will take some for free and will send you a very nice thank you PM, so that you dont fee bad at night scamming these people buying.  

I was thinking the same, and therefore I gave the BTC I got for my XRP to the Bitcoin100 charity. I suggest that others who recieved XRP do something similar. Ripple seems to me like the potentially biggest premine scam ever pulled off. Opencoin (the creators of Ripple) gave themselves 100% of the XRP, and they are a for-profit organization. I have serious doubts that a for-profit venture has anything other than maximizing their profits in mind, so I see no reason why I should trust them to fairly distribute their XRP. Please think twice before you actively participate and support this potential massive premine scam.

Ripple seems even worse than Solidcoin to me. The Solidcoin developers premined a large fraction of their coins, and the community raised a big fuss about it when it was discovered. All trust was lost, Solidcoin flopped (and rightly so). I am wondering, why is it suddenly acceptable for Opencoin to engage in an even bigger premining operation? Besides, the solidcoin guys had the same reasoning as Opencoin does: "We will only use those premined coins for the greater good, to help stabilize the currency. Trust us! Also, we deserve those coins for our efforts."

Of course you can, my point is you can't if you support Ripple due to it's backward philosophy of centralization.
