Apply thermal paste to 6950?

Was watching a video on youtube about applying thermal paste for bitcoin mining and one of the comments stated that applying thermal paste to a 6950 could actually raise the temps.  Is this true? If not, which thermal paste do you recommend.  Thanks

You are right and wrong. Applying thermal paste can cause an increase in temps, but it has nothing to do with mining. It has to do with how much you're using. Your tube should tell you how much to apply, but if it doesn't just try to keep it spread fairly thin. Don't spread it like you would a peanut butter sandwich or you will most likely have issues with temp.

ahh yes forgot to mention that, was assuming he would know how to apply it (watch a vid), but for the most part it should help temps

Artic 5 is way over priced and needs to set for 200 hours to reach it's maximum efficiency. Go with OCZ Freeze. It's cheaper and better. Also, if anybody has any dead video cards due to over-clocking, I do reflows. And not not with cheap 20 dollar hot air guns. Laptops, PS3s, Xbox 360s, Video cards.

mx2/3, best thermal paste since arctic silver. i'm using mx2, very easy to apply.

manufacturers apply way too much paste on their chips, that's why replacing it is often a good idea and yields about 5-10K difference.

I'd also recommend a non-conductive TIM! A tiny dot in the center of the die is plenty!
