Simple question, what is the best Litecoin wallet? (Blockchain don't seem to do Litecoins as far as I can tell.)

Best off keeping them in the proper client, that way you're responsible for their security and you can do it properly.

Is it possible to make paper wallets and then monitor them as watch only addresses with the official program?

I don't think so. Maybe this will do? http://explorer.litecoin.net/I use the btce wallet
You're trusting all your litecoins on a russian service that might disappear any day without a trace?

Okay so the consensus is that I should use the official wallet. I've never used wallets I store locally before due to the potential for the computer to be lost, stolen, break etc.
So can you backup / restore the wallet from a cd / memory stick etc?
EDITED
I downloaded the official client where there are backup and export options. Although there is no obvious import option.

All you need is wallet.dat file. You can replace the backup manually

I don't get that sorry. Assuming all files are deleted and I have a wallet.dat where do I put it to create the restore?

So this would go in:
C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Litecoin\wallet.dat
then.

I try to always stick with the official wallets for any given crypto.
There are numerous downsides to storing coins in the client program though. I think it's more about weighing the up / downsides of each type of wallet and using whichever comes out best. Personally I think that paper wallets are the best as the potential downsides are fire and theft and I doubt anyone would know I had any crypto-currency. But with LTC you don't have that option so I was dubious about using the application which is vulnerable to Malware.
