If you get lots of HW errors try lowering the Intensity and experimenting with the thread concurrency, it is likely you have it set too high

Try reaper

Code:
http://wiki.solidcoin.info/wiki/Reaper#Download

and you'll need a mining proxy(as i couldnt get reaper to work with stratum) Am assuming you'll be pool mining?

Code:
mining.bitcoin.cz/media/download/mining_proxy.exe
<<-----this one is for slush's pool.

The Bitcoin.conf should contain something.   The following should be enough to get you going

host localhost
port 8332
user your user
pass your password

protocol bitcoin

worksize 128
aggression 21
threads_per_gpu 1
vectors 2

Then the reaper.conf should have something in too.   This should be enough to get you started.

kernel reaper.cl
save_binaries yes
enable_graceful_shutdown yes
long_polling yes

device 0

mine bitcoin

Just the only way i could get my ati 5670 working

(or you could just use a mining proxy and configure phoenix to use the mining proxy)

I had tried CGMiner with my 6850 and it would quit as soon as it started.  I ended up using Phoenix Miner, in Windows 7 mode, until I put in my Radeon 7970.  Now CGMiner works ok.

Ok cool

So when you installed Driver and SDK did you install ALL next, next, next, next etc? as default

As you only actually need
ATI display driver, ATI catalyst install manager, APP 2.3 & VC++ (Definalty not CCC as this can cause the drv to crash and later when your over / underclocking will cause you issues - but that's for another day lol)
http://bitcoinminer.com/post/3828447301/ati-stream-sdk-downloads for older SDK's
- From the research i've done, DRV 11.6 and SDK 2.3 works best for me and my HD6870's
So you may wish to run the setups again and remove the bits you don't want / need.
BUT NOT YET
try the below 1st and see what you get.

Try starting CGMINER with a batch file too
Cut and past the below into a txt file
Replace the
-u XXXXX.workerX -p XXXXX with your user name password for Slush's pool.
The REM's just comment out and for your info only
As over / underclocking is for another day....but won't be too far away of you get this mining well.
The default GPU Engine on the card is 940 and the GPU mem is 1100
With no tweaks the mem will on drop to 100 below the GPU Engine (this will be better for you)
Save the file as .bat in the cgminer directory
1 forumite called his cash.bat so his wife could double click whist he was at work lol!

Code:
title Slush Pool 6870
REM for the title bar of you dos box, helps you keep track of what going on
color e1
REM I use the colours so when i VNC onto the machine i know if its mining BTC or LTC without looking too hard
cgminer -o http://stratum.bitcoin.cz:3333 -u XXXXX.workerX -p XXXXX -I 9 --gpu-memclock 840 --temp-cutoff 90
REM The lower the GPU clock, the less power it consumes and the less heat is generated. GPU Mem can be real low for
REM BTC mining, but you need GPU Mem for LTC mining. --temp-cutoff 90 kills the mining if your card exceeds 90c in temp
REM So leave it in!

Once your up and running with the above, you may want to google and search this forum for MSI Afterbuner and further tweaks
Read all of this thread for tweaks and why
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4292.0

Good luck, BTC / LTC mining is a strong learning curve but fun too if your technically minded
The fun starts when you want to ca$h them for real money (fiat as they like to say on here)

Let me know how you get on

Great your up and running
I have a nagging question for you, as I think we may have over-thought this esp as your now mining
demonstrating you do not have a hardware issue.

Did you re - download cgminer latest version 3.1.1
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=28402.0

as in my limited experience - if 1 client works they all generally work?

I did redownload cgminer yes . and also older versions.
Most of the older ones keeps crashing....

but ine interesting thing is on Phonix i cant enable BFI_INT  but it should be supported by the card?

also did try the card in other system but same problems.

my gess is its that my card dont work well with cgminer.
or its really some strange HW problem.

Thats exactly what i thought when i got my card working with reaper and the mining proxy.  Not a hardware but software issue!

I have BAMT install in a rig waiting on a new card, so might try it in that and see if it works or not.

I was thinking it was maybe to do with 'long poll'  which reaper seems to do that the others dont?

Try this guide for example configuration for your HW

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison

Indeed your HW failures are likely caused by an Intensity rate set to high. However, I had a different issue that was causing my HW errors

I have 3 GPU's in my setup and CGMiner found all 3, but Catalyst Control Center was running in the background and disabling one of the cards so I always had HW failures in CGMiner for that card. If you also do gaming on your rig I would suggest you keep Catalyst Control Center running, but recommend you kill CCC.exe and MOM.exe in Task Manager before you startup CG Miner

I have disabled Catalyst Control Center from startup by doing Start->Run->msconfig and under the startup tab (I think) you can see it listed, if you uncheck it it won't startup with windows anymore. I then created a shortcut on my desktop to run that same path that was in msconfig incase I wanted to do some gaming and utilize Crossfire.

I would also suggest you check out a program called CGWatcher, its a companion 3rd party tool that insures that CGMiner stays running.
