We are traveling internationally to New Zealand and I was just thinking how convenient it would be if there was a BTC ATMs in Auckland.  It would really save us some money in exchange fees.  Hopefully in a few years this will be the case.  I was thinking about setting up some sort of local exchange with someone there but it gets really tricky trying to arrange timing and locations.  If there were ATMs in all the major international airports people might start using BTC just for a way to save money.

BTC ATM = receiving fiat money after depositing BTC or receiving BTC after depositing fiat money?

The former seems to be quite a bit more difficult than the latter.

https://www.coinlend.org <-- automated lending at various exchanges.
https://www.bitfinex.com <-- Trade BTC for other currencies and vice versa.

Hopefully they should be able to do both.

I agree, that would be a great place for them.

BTC ATMs are really inefficient. Storing Bitcoins in your phone isn't. I am hoping that as time goes by more viable solutions will be introduced.

Well, the best scenario would be for BTC to be accepted everywhere.  However, until that day, ATMs could still serve a purpose.  It would be more of a transitional thing.

why do you think that the BTC ATMs won't have worse exchange rates?

It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.

There is that.  They would have to beat the exchange rate to make it worthwhile then wouldn't they?

Convenient yes, but also very expensive. Most airport locations are expensive and that means over paying for everything. A Bitcoin ATM located at an airport will have to either charge an additional fee or offer a less favourable exchange rate than one located somewhere else just to cover the additional overhead of being located at an airport.

Concerned that blockchain bloat will lead to centralization? Storing less than 4 GB of data once required the budget of a superpower and a warehouse full of punched cards. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/87/IBM_card_storage.NARA.jpg https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punched_card

this is the reason why exchange rates are terrible at international airports to begin with. adding bitcoin ATMs will not lower fees.

I am a big fan of face-to-face BTC transactions.

Consider finding a BTC dealer (in advance) at your destination using
Craigslist http://www.craigslist.org/about/sites
and/or
LocalBitcoins.com https://localbitcoins.com/

and take a look at the Tips for local transactions thread at
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=137272.0;all
which contains my report.

Airports automatically have good security and WiFi.

The chances are good that you will not need to wait for ATMs to be installed at airports.  And your transactions will be much more private than an ATM will provide.
