Wallet/Exchange Relation

I have a newbie question: If it is not recommended to store your coins on any Exchange sites, but on a Hardware or Cold Storage, then how are you supposed to exchange a coin before it dumps in matter of minutes?

you can sell/or buy your stake on the exchange and then transfer the money to an offline wallet

the sell/buy on exchanges happens instantly, you don't need at that point an offline wallet because it is "saved" in the exchange

from there it's your choice whether you should send it to an offline wallet or not
