what's the best coin to mine if you have CPU only? Obviously not looking to earn a fortune, just some coins to play with, preferably something stakable.

you can try mining XMR monero coin and there price is increasing day by day you will not get very high amount of hash but still you can earn some amount

I looked into it a couple months back and monero was the most profitable back the, and with th eprice hike the last few days id say its more than likely even more profitable now. Is it worth it though? Probably not imo. Ive got an i7 5820k and the return per week wasnt worth running my cpu flat out all day and risking prematurely killing it. I didnt even factor in what i would cost electricity wise but i doubt i would have been breaking even.
