It is a common myth that Bitcoin is ruled by a majority of miners. This is not true. Bitcoin miners "vote" on the ordering of transactions, but that's all they do. They can't vote to change the network rules.

Hey folks! I've raised the minimum amount in each bucket per round to 0.02 BTC. This will reduce the amount of money that is chewed up in Bitcoin transaction fees. This should also raise the expected value of all the current buckets!

To clarify: the minimum bet is still 0.01 BTC, but no bucket will fall until all buckets have at least 0.02 BTC.

So i'm a little unclear on the payout schema here.

When a bucket falls the total is cut in half and pays the other 2 buckets (which didn't fall).

How is the payout distributed inside each bucket... proportionally? So put in 0.1 and 10 others put in 0.01... I would get half the payout going to that bucket.. or 25% of the fallen bucket?

To me it seems  it 1 bucket falls with .01 btc  ~3% is subtracted and the rest goes to each person with a bet on a bucket

Say Ted bids 0.01 Red, BoB bids 0.01 Blue and James goes 0.01 Green.

Red Falls
Ted loses his 0.01
0.01- 3% (server cost)= ~0.008

Bob and James receive ~0.004 and goes to the next Round.

Then the fun continues

Hi firefop!

When a bucket falls, with value X, the following happens:

  • An estimated transaction fee is subtracted from X.
  • The house fee is applied to X. (At the moment, that's 0.05%.)
  • X is split in half. One half goes to one bucket, the other half goes to the other.
  • Each half is distributed fairly among the backers of the other buckets, proportionally to how much they backed the other bucket by.

So in case that you had 0.1 BTC in a bucket, and 10 other people had 0.01 BTC in that bucket, you would get half of the payout going to that bucket. That's roughly 25% of the value of the fallen bucket. This is true regardless of whatever the other standing bucket contains.

Buckets not falling???

They are falling. :-) You just gotta be patient. This game is all based on the blockchain and its inherent unpredictibility. So sometimes it takes a while, but it will fall.

Rest assured that when a problem does occur, I will take care of it. Thanks for letting me know your concern!

You know - you could make a companion game to let others bet on things like when the buckets will fall... what range the winnings will be in... etc.

I'll have to think about this. I have already thought about implementing a companion game where you bet on which bucket is going to fall. If you get it right, you get some of the fallen bucket's money. Otherwise, the money goes to the people who played in that bucket.

But unless there is some demand for that, I'm going to leave the buckets as they are for now, and let the player base grow, before trying something too different.

I did a more in-depth analysis of the bucket history. Here's what I extracted.

Mean payouts:

  • R: x1.05207502692
  • G: x0.843458794071
  • B: x1.13571379612

One-round winnings:

  • R: x0.868529463366
  • G: x0.680212456483
  • B: x0.387926613817

Long-term winnings:

  • R: x1.21928174665
  • G: x1.12886322565
  • B: x1.47710518338

Explanation:

  • Mean payouts: The overall expected value of spending 1 BTC indiscriminately on a given bucket. That is, without any kind of strategy, other than "always bet on a particular bucket".
  • One-round winnings: The overall expected value of winning a single round, immediately.
  • Long-term winnings: The overall expected value of winning a single round, after many rounds.

I think it's interesting that a game with simple rules results in so much unknown behavior. I think it's also interesting that the green bucket has been losing so much lately. You'd expect it to always be somewhere in the middle!

Changes have been made:

  • Reduced the minimum bet to ฿0.005. (Was ฿0.01.)
  • Increased the minimum round amount to ฿0.025. (Was ฿0.02.)

This is the best time to try out Satoshi Buckets! The house fee is 0.5% for one more day (then it will be raised to 1%, to try and cover the costs of running the server). The minimum bet is very low now, so it's a good time to try it out.

I simplified the giveaway! My first idea was too complicated. This one is nicer and easier to administer.

There's only been 5 rounds today so far! This means that there's a good chance to win the 0.1 BTC today if you play a round or two!
