Nvidia Hashing questions....

Hi there,


this might have been answered somewhere before, but i've spent the last 3 days just browsing here and i've seen/taken in so much information i'ld have no idea where i found it (and search is not giving the result i needed, might just be me).

I have an Nvidia 460 GX in my comp. it's hashing at 17.5 mhashes with GPUminer.

Is there a way to speed this up? I've read something about openCL drivers, but they are just in beta if i'm correct, has anyone had any success/failure with these drivers?

Using the websites to hash (bitcoinplus for example), i seem to be getting 20-21 mhahses/second. Where is that difference coming from?


Also, i cant seem to get other miners like DiabloMiner to work, it detects the card & then it gives a big text of errors, which disappears so fast i cant seem to read it.

I'm running on Windows 7 btw


If anyone could point me in the right direction, it'ld be much appreciated.

Just downloaded the latest driver for my own card - 301.42 WHQL

...Other Details: Supports multiple languages and APIs for GPU computing: CUDA C, CUDA C++, CUDA Fortran, OpenCL, DirectCompute, and Microsoft C++ AMP...

Then I was curious so looked at the section (supported products) GeForce 400 series ... GTX 460 v2, GTX 460 SE v2, GTX 460 SE, GTX 460

if betas had better support or not, couldn't say... opencl is supposedly supported in 301.42 WHQL but I really don't see how opencl versus native cuda would make a whole lot of difference? Also, did you mean GTX? I tried googling for nvidia 460 GX and couldn't find any such named cards (in the years since I got my first cuda-capable card, never seen any nvidia product with anything named "GX" series)

As far as I'm aware. Real problem is that bitcoin is SHA256 intensive and unlike ATI boards, nivida's have trouble doing integer rotate math (takes more cycles)

... ATI is able to do the right math for SHA256 (used by bitcoin) and does it faster. Doesn't mean ATI is better for gaming, or other things like say folding with one's GPU. Rather frustrated by this myself.

I know next to nothing about mining but I know 2 important things which are very relevant to you.

A) The 400 series is NOTORIOUSLY inefficient; those things run HOT and consume OODLES of electricity.

B) 20 Mhash is NOTHING (and will net you nothing significant)

unless you compare the prices for heating oil / natural gas / coal / etc. and it turns out that burning electricity is cheaper.

300 watts of power = 1000 BTU heat generated per hour... though for the warmer half of the year (northern hemisphere, that would be now) ... oh goodness, the current heat wave in north america. yikes!

Just sell it and get an ATI card, Nvidia cards are a waste of electricity. Although it's weird that I have the same card and I got about 56Mh/s with it (it wasn't even overclocked).
