Ok, I know its not possible, or worth it to mine BTC on CPU or GPU now. And as I only want to begin doing this as a small hobby at the moment I wanna do some Altcoin on my CPU/GPU. Seeing as my PC is on almost 24/7 anyway it seems worth it to me.

Problems ive hit so far:

No mining software that ive used so far actually works for me, Im feeling this is due to maybe my out-dated system (Intel Core2Quad / GTX 260 Black Edition)

I know people have mined in the past on a GTX 260 cos ive seen the threads on this very forum.

Ive followed afew guides that claim to be "easiest way to mine ETH/LTC"

Ethminer - no joy
Pooler CPU - no joy
Claymore - no joy
NiceHash - no joy

I just wanna play with cypto mining looools

you are correct that it is out dated
but i agree that it is one of the best ways to understand what to do or at least learn.
i will try to look up a few older apps that should help you out
and get things running  and then i will send you a pm on where to find them
if that is ok? but please give just a bit more info as
model of motherboard...
and actuall model of core2quad
as for the gtx 260 i already know what to look for... thanks
 and good luck.

edit...  go ahead and check out http://cryptomining-blog.com/
they have a good archive of older software

I should also add that my goals for now are mining SHA256 and Scrypt on CPU... chances of me getting anything working on my GPU are slim i feel

Sha256 is not recommended to even learn on CPU. I would look at scrypt X11 or skunkhash. With lower diff you'll at least be able to see shares submitted. Learn how to tune equipment. XRY or Royalties is good to learn on. Bismuth is mined via CPU only and is python based. Great and valuable learning experience right there.

Yea i wanted to try for Litecoin on Scrypt. Followed a guide which didnt end up working. Not sure as im using the correct or best suited software for each algorithm. When im home ill hit google more. If you could offer up any useful links it'll be great

Download the Bytecoin official wallet and try to mine BCN through the interface there. If your CPU is a quad core it is worth it, and the price of BCN has increased lately. Link where to download the wallet :

https://bytecoin.org/downloads/

As for your GPU- I am afraid it is way outdated so you cannot put it to good use.

I don't know  Grin , I am glad that I helped, I started out the same as you, I tried CPU mining before jumping in and having quite a few boards running some with Nvidia cards and some with ATI. Nothing beats the feeling when you see your amount of the coin your are mining grow. You can try to mine from GTX 750 ti and from R7 ATI series if you find them cheap in your country, they are cheap everywhere now and they are good for beginners, if your PC is up 24/7 almost buy a 750 ti used for only 40-50 euro now and same price for R7 ATI, just a bit more 60-70 euro. Do not bother to by older generation cards as they will not be successful into mining.

Oh yes you helped :-)

Got 2 PC's and a laptop mining now hehe.

Ill still keep having a stab at other methods, i want to get a cmd prompt miner running, either on my CPU or GPU. Who knows, i might still crack it 1 day
