Do I have to wait for the transaction to be confirmed before closing the client or can it be confirmed by the receiving client?

from my understanding, neither client needs to be open. it will confirm automaticly. the receiving client might wish to leave their client open to verify the transaction if they dont trust the sender. i think its recommended you get 10 confirmations if you dont trust them.

So to answer my own question, yes it is necessary to wait for a transaction to be confirmed before closing the client. Lesson learned...
