“The Blockchain Taskforce in Kenya Has Already Been Formed” — An Interview with Morris Gitonga from Nairobi
Kenya has shown a huge adoption and growth in applying technology, for instance, M-Pesa. Do you see the same happening to cryptocurrencies and blockchain?
Morris: M-Pesa has massively grown in terms of adoption in Kenya, and because people have a strong need to make financial operations with ease, M-Pesa is a perfect tool that offers immediate transfer of money, with small limitations. Even if you have access to banks, you have to access them at certain hours, certain days etc., it is not as convenient as with M-Pesa. Even though M-Pesa is a little bit expensive in terms of the cost of the transaction, people are willing to look past the costs, for the purposes of convenience.
Talking about cryptocurrency, locals are quite fascinated with Bitcoin, and lots of people are interested in trading or as they put it “investment in bitcoin”. Except that, comparing to M-Pesa, cryptos have no limitations while sending larger amounts of money and its cost friendly. It’s important to mention that with the high unemployment rate in Kenya, most youths end up working in the informal sector also known as Juakali sector. So, most of the young people working in this Juakali/Informal sector are using cryptocurrencies to facilitate their payment transactions. Generally speaking, the population in Kenya becomes friendlier with technology, so people start to use cryptocurrencies more. For instance, in restaurants, in normal shops (I know a retail shoe shop and a restaurant where they accept BTC), so the trend is growing.
How did you find out about cryptocurrency?
Morris: I first learnt about it in 2011, we just had a conversation with a friend and he mentioned BTC, like it’s the case for many people in the space I didn’t take an interest. Only to hear of the same in early 2017 and this time due to its massive growth in price I became interested and started own research to understand more about Bitcoin. Just to add, in 2017 it was a first time when I was paid with BTC for my freelance job, and actually the same year, I and my friends decided to form a media portal CoinWeez that currently accepts payments in cryptocurrencies too.
Wow! It’s been a long time since 2017. And what’s the common source from which people get to know about cryptos in Kenya these days?
Morris: People tend to get to know about cryptocurrency via social media channels, the most popular would be Facebook and Youtube. We also organize meetups for cryptocurrency lovers after office hours during weekdays and over weekends. So, as you can see, Kenyans don’t want just to sit and relax at home, they are always eager to learn something new and get more educated, especially when it comes to technology.
How do you feel the current sentiment of cryptocurrencies in Kenya? What do you feel the government stands is in Cryptocurrencies? Is there a chance the crypto will be banned?
Morris: Personally, I don’t see this happening, as we have quite pro-technology government officials who are in charge of ICT, and competently understand the technology, as well as the potential it can give to the Kenyan people. Furthermore, the blockchain taskforce in Kenya has already been formed and is headed by a very progressive committee member under the leadership of tech-savvy chairman Dr Bitange Ndemo. So, I’d say, from the government side, they don’t have an intention to ban it, but rather warn about possible threats and just create a caution.
Is it easy to turn bitcoin into fiat in Kenya? M-Pesa is a fiat.
Morris: Yes, it’s quite easy. M-Pesa has the exchange of Bitcoin to Fiat currency using Localbitcoins which is peer to peer online marketplace, so you can easily sell or buy Bitcoin in exchange to M-Pesa, or simply peer-to-peer where you can meet and transact face to face while still using the platform. It is common here to exchange face-to-face.
Emphy is providing opportunities worldwide for landlords & tenants of short-term housing. We decided to launch our (mobile) platform on Kenyan market, as it’s quite large (in terms of real-estate) as well as the banking sector is not well developed yet, so we’re trying to help the local Kenyan landlords to make income with a help of Emphy ecosystem based on the blockchain. Both, landlords and tenants from around the world will be able to pay and receive money in Emphy Coins. Do you see it as a good concept for Kenyan landlords?
Morris: Not only to landlords but young Kenyans who like to travel. Mostly the young generation is always looking for options online. Coming from Kenyan culture, it’s important for us to have ratings present, as well as the convenience of use. For instance, I tried using Airbnb, and to be honest, it’s been a quite hectic experience for me. I didn’t manage to secure my rental home because of the miscommunication with the landlord, and as Kenyan person, I’ve been quite reluctant to pay the amount in advance. So, in this case, I see the option of the landlord receiving payments on a daily basis from a guest is quite good.
What about landlords?
Morris: When it comes to Kenyan landlords, I think it would be beneficial for them to be facilitated with Emphy, especially the platform would be most applicable to young landlords, because they are more technology-friendly. Critically thinking, I think that Kenyan people involved in real-estate, and living outside Nairobi, should be more approached as not that many people from real-estate know about cryptocurrencies, especially in cities outside Nairobi, so I think it’s important to approach and educate people about this.
And about the concept, smartphones are a big thing in Kenya now — so we tend to use smartphones a lot to access online marketplaces, so if Kenyans can access the convenience, rating system, and build trust via Emphy — it would be great.
We believe we’re on the right track then! It’s good to know that as a Kenyan citizen, you consider Emphy as a great opportunity for locals. Emphy Releases Third Public Beta
Our team is excited to announce that the third Beta build of Emphy platform is available now! We’ve been working hard to deliver Emphy users a great experience. This means we are ensuring that the UX/UA is intuitive and thoughtful and that our backend systems are robust and ready for scaling. In this build we introduce a number of technical improvements regarding infrastructure, continuous integration and continuous delivery (CICD), API optimization and other backend improvements. From the functional point of view, we have implemented services for booking (such as adding and booking inventories) and added Google Maps support for inventory’s location.

Due to heavy changes and improvements in the beta release you must REMOVE (UNINSTALL) the previous build before installing the new version (Build 3).

Emphy Releases Fourth Public Beta
We officially announce that the fourth Beta build of Emphy platform is available now! During the last sprint we focused on the development of blockchain services and first financial services, that will be available for testing very soon. First, we focused on precise testing and improving financial services in order to provide the best quality and experience for the future Emphy users. Also, we paid particular attention to improving user experience while using Emphy application, such as chat and review services. Technical improvements, refactoring and bug fixes were also performed for backend functions. Our next steps are related to testing and further development of financial services that are the most vital part of Emphy application.

The Next Development Report of Emphy Platform Is Available
Our team is excited to announce that another build of Emphy Platform is available now and as always, we would like to share with you the results. During this sprint we carried forward the development of financial services. The implementation of the user’s account is finished and is being tested now. Also, we have been working on debit and tokens withdrawal functionality and continue improving the customer experience while using Emphy application. Furthermore, swiping functionality is added when working with your published inventory list. Review, messaging and search functionalities got further improvements. Technical improvements, refactoring and bug fixes for both backend and frontend functions will be delivered with the next build.
Our further steps are related to development of financial services that are the most vital and challenging part of Emphy application.

Emphy Platform Development Report is Available Now — November 8th, 2018

Emphy team is excited to announce that another build of Emphy Platform is already available and has been distributed to everyone who singed up for Beta Testing on the official website. During this sprint, we focused on both implementing and testing financial services such as token transactions, cold and hot wallet processing and exchange rates. Also, we continued to improve user experience and will soon add a support for videos in inventory’s review flow. It’s full steam ahead for the development, and these are the progress we’ve added, that makes us a step closer to the launch of the platform:
- Fixed UI bug for the Inventory Details (Booking). User Image for Contact section is available now.
- Fixed displaying available/unavailable dates for the ApplicationsDates screen.
- Implemented a mobile view for the Bank Accounts screens.

Emphy Development Update Is Available Now!
Over the past few weeks we’ve been preparing the latest release of the Emphy Platform. Our team has been putting countless hours into the design and development of this build that contains both fixes and new features.
It all begins with security, so we focused precisely on the payment workflow, including payment and stripe cards processing. Furthermore, the user experiencewas improved by implementing QR code for “My Balance” status checking. UIimprovements include the progress bar activity when scrolling images in the application, new error messages when booking is not possible, pagination on screens containing long lists of data, navigation to chat from the request details. Also, we removed the possibility to add a review if a user has not booked an inventory. Moreover, fixes were added for currency conversion, Android header and text inputs, as well as inventory status changes. Our main goal for the next sprint is to finish payment flow and start testing the real usage of EPY token in the application. To keep you up-to-date on the process in more detail, we also compiled a list of the recent platform’s development highlights:

- Corrected displaying of the credit/debit card
- Added correct convertation of currencies in the app

Check Up On The Next Emphy Development Update
Our dedicated team has already made incremental updates to the previous beta version of the Emphy platform based on your early feedback and therefore, we would like to share with you the latest results. During this sprint, we focused on finalizing the payments processes with EPY tokens, improving customer experience with FAQ section, Terms and Conditions, Privacy policy screens. Also, we fixed bugs that are related to both front end and backend. UI fixes for iPhone 5/SE were added to make Emphy more usable on these devices as well. Navigation in application was also improved according to the beta testers. Now we are one step closer to launching the whole payment workflow, which we plan to test very soon.

Emphy Platform Development Report is Available Now — March 25th, 2019
Over the past few weeks we’ve been preparing the latest release of the Emphy Platform. We’ve also added some highly important features together with the fixes and workflow improvements. Our development team made a great progress with the payment workflow and implemented hold- and cold wallet system on our side, so from now on the users can make deposits in EPY tokens in the application. We also implemented the Withdrawal function, that can already can be tested. Furthermore, the cash back logic was added on the backend side and we will do our best to make it available for our users in the next builds.
We also continued working on the stabilization of our app and fixed issues related to application crash in “Applications” screen, as well as wrong balance in “My balance screen”. Scroll bars for “Inventory details” screen was also fixed. Other improvements include minor UI fixes, adding push messages and web sockets for the better user experience in our app. Here’s an overview of some of the updates over the last month:

Emphy Development Update — Production Environment Is Set
Over the last few weeks, our team managed to finalize and set up a production environment on Emphy Platform. Now Emphy’s API runs on production Ethereum blockchain, so you can start using real EPY tokens when booking inventories. Apart from that, we focused on the acceptance testing of all services. The improvements of user experience were performed in the notifications, user token balance, and booking cancellation. Users will also get bonus tokens if registered by invitation code. We also finished the implementation of the administrative interface, where our administrators could support Emphy daily workflows, edge cases and provide the best quality services to our clients. Other fixes were related to API services and CI/CD environment. The following are the major development updates that were performed on the platform:
- Fix for filter and default status for notification
- Fix for BookingPayment and PendingOut balance
- Fix for Cancel Booking on edge cases
- Add bonuses for person who registered with invite code
- Possibility to get exchange amount on admin
- Possibility to set storage amount for incoming bonuses transactions
- Adjusted logic for automatic decline after 24h of inactivity
- Additional fields for Review & Inventories
- Added Refresh to “My Balance” screen
- Fix text on map about address
- Add clear filters button
- Fix for user and cover photo editing
- Fix for mutations to accept/delete booking
- Add new pop up text to cancel booking
- Fixes for CI/CD
