Just to the basic when youre at school always read and listen to your teachers. No special skill are needed as long as you obey the rules, dont be in hurry and your in a right way.

Welcome on board, you are an early adopter as we have yet to reach that tremendous number of people using digital form of fiat currencies so don't think that you are late.

Now coming back to your question, you have already answered your question in the question itself. You are new and thus you need to start reading and understanding more about it. Fortunately, you are on the right platform to gain tremendous knowledge about Bitcoin and related topics. Do not start trading or investing in Bitcoin or altcoins right away before investing your time in adopting the things and understanding it. Use the search box in the upper right corner to find the answer to your queries.

Start earning your first satoshi from the faucets.

I recommend faucethub.io - very good multiwallet interface with exchange option.. You will learn very much from this practice

A few basic crypto rules and tips:

1.) Trust no one.
2.) Do your own research, don't listen to cheerleaders
3.) backup your wallets and passphrases
4.) backup your wallets and passphrases again.

A few things people can forget:

1.)  What if you suddenly die?  Leave instructions in your will about how to retrieve your BTC for your loved ones.
2.)  Make backups of your backups of your backups.

FOR THE ADVANCED USERS:

1.) Always run new wallets in an isolated VM
2.) Encrypt and then encrypt again, and again......
