The current IRC channel #bitcoin-dev on freenode is increasingly becoming a user support channel.

I propose that we recommend (and list on http://www.bitcoin.org/contact ) using #bitcoin for everything not related to development and highly technical issues.

#bitcoin on freenode is largely dead, and appears quite usable for new purposes.  a few (older? modified?) clients use #bitcoin for IRC seeding, but these clients get less frequent over time.

The "gribble" bot recommends using #bitcoin-discussion, but using #bitcoin seems simpler and more direct (and less to type).

Unlike traditional banking where clients have only a few account numbers, with Bitcoin people can create an unlimited number of accounts (addresses). This can be used to easily track payments, and it improves anonymity.

problem is, #bitcoin is orphaned. we have no ops there, and will not for the foreseeable future. the first time the channel is attacked by trolls/spambots/etc, you will suddenly realize that it's good to have ops. Smiley

that's the reason we currently recommend #bitcoin-discussion, because we have control of that channel.

#bitcoin currently isn't registered, why not simply register it? If the Bitcoin project is registered as a project with Freenode (As it should be) it would get control over the entire #bitcoin namespace (#bitcoin-*).
