There are other ways to receive bitcoin currency apart from mining or requesting donations.

I suggest checking out How to Get More Bitcoins — A Guide for Newbies or something like it.

I'm curious if the block chain could have like a checkbox that indicates that you are donating to someone so that way someone could run a script to determine how much "generosity" the bitcoin network has.
