Last couple of days I've been trying to get my account verified by some exchanges, but this is apparently a very lengthy process (if not a real pia). Is it always like that ?

I would like to ask on what exchange you did try to be verified? Sometimes this thing does matter on which exchange you are in to.For me I didn't experience any problems regarding on verification process which it only takes a couple of days which I do believe a normal duration on this kind of transaction.Yes, it does really works on this way, sometimes have delays sometimes it doesn't took soo long. You would really need patience specially if you are still on verification process.

Verification is usually quite lengthily and pia, I guess it's because paperwork and 3rd party is involved.
However, usually you can do transactions even without verification, just the amounts you can play with are limited.
I advise you ask their customer support about your specific case, you may get better answers than here.

Bittrex and Localbitcoins are the ones I still use regularly and both have automated verification for low-level (or the first level) verification. Software-handled, so it just detects the details of the documents you submit and cross-checks against whatever internal database they use. Worked for me in minutes and opens up a substantial daily limit which I will probably never exceed in this lifetime. I also opened an account at viabtc exchange when I needed to unload my BCH, and they had a similar setup. If I recall, even a phone verification is all you need to unlock several thousand dollars daily limits.

Try them out if you're having problems. This isn't an endorsement of any, mind you.

Yes it is always like that. It's for their security, legalities, and paperworks so it should take time. Though initial verifications normally should not take days. But upgrading your account to increase your limit would take time.

There are exchanges that would almost snuff life out of you all in the process of verification in which they still come and place some restrictions on your account if some threshold is exceeded or some funny violation of their terms and conditions better still I use exchange sites that are reputable and would not ask for verification, the only one you will do is from Google where you fill a capcha and aside that, nothing else is to be done. Deposit and start trading there are several of them, Visit the service announcement section of the forum.

I am not very much into exchange websites but verification is same in most of the places online and locally.
It's a lengthy process and should be because you don't want any criminal or scammer in your industry do you?

My experience was rather easy. Verifying email and two factor authentication will allow for minimum trading.

Personally I was verified on Bittrex overnight and have been using them comfortably since then.  That was only a month ago or so, so they wouldn't have been much less overwhelmed than they could be now.

There could be several reasons for your problem, including:

-The exchange being incompetent and not handling the requests in a reasonable order or simply not handling them (Poloniex in particular)
-The authorities putting pressure on exchanges to comply with increasingly strict KYC policies and deal differently with people from different countries
-The exchange being overwhelmed (it's possible if they have had a surge in usage lately)
-You giving incorrect information or not clear images, which would require them to check it more carefully

Sometimes it's time to process an exchange site. because many also have the requirements. So it's time to verify. Especially if you missed something wrong. That's exactly how it is for your security and for the exchanger. So do not worry I'm right, your best requirements will be known as well.

What they are doing is KYC / Know your costumer policy

Some exchanges don't allow you to verify yourself if you do their limit amount of $100-upto $5000 on one of them that I know of.

They are responsible if you transfer more so they ask for you information to cover them self from investigations I am assuming.

And if transferring crypto into fiat you are definitely going to need to get verified.

They want to know who they are sending money too! Wink

Don't know what exchange you're trying to register with, but yes, that's normal.  I don't know exactly what they do with your information, but legitimate exchanges need to do the whole KYC/AML stuff.  Don't sweat it.  It'll be worth it in the end when you can buy & sell bitcoin with fiat.  There aren't enough honest places to do that.  A few months ago, I was going to do all the required stuff at Kraken, but they couldn't read my drivers license and photo, and it turned into a huge mess.  I said screw 'em.

I do not think that the verification process will take a long time, maybe you are experiencing a problem, so please ask for support, it will be easier.

I think it really depends on the exchange and how much $$$ you are looking to trade. Most exchanges have low level verification requirements for users trading low amounts, but more stringent verification for those trading large amounts.
