I think that as more of bitcoin's potential will uncover, more the coin will be widely accepted. The coin is heading towards being a mainstream currency.
It is not being accepted currently by the governmemt due to its high volatile and decentralised nature in my opinion.
The coin has to gain more stability so that it can lead to a stronger economy. Also stability is important for the coin to act as unit of account and a store of value on which the public can depend. As soon as the coin achieves it, chances of its acceptance will increase.
