The Adblock Plus EasyList maintainers couldn't block the forum's ads, so they just blocked the links in the ads everywhere on the forum. So that's why you might see posts censored like this:

What website are you looking at? Clicking through the ad goes to http://butterflylabs.com/products?s1 and lets you checkout without ever mentioning the pre-order status. That's no giant "PRE-ORDER NOW" button. That's a giant ORDER NOW button.

Thanks for great feedback! In Finland we use decimal comma. OP edited.

What do you think, is it better that buying the option is a direct blockchain transaction that can be verified, or is it trustable enough if we build this on a similar easywallet urlpassword userinterface as eg. https://bitcoinvideocasino.com/?r=1813514798 ?

The latter would offer much better userfriendlyness but also require better security. The former has very few attack vectors and is almost DDOSproof.

There's nothing I can change in the forum's HTML to stop this. This isn't a side-effect of my anti-ABP code. If you don't want posts censored, you need to disable ABP (or just these filters) on bitcointalk.org. You can complain about it here.

Yes, it is. You're the one who started the arms race with EasyList. If you removed your anti-ABP code, easylist maintainers wouldn't have to go through such extreme measures. This whole arms race is retarded, and you're turning it into a game of "why are you hitting yourself".

It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.

I would just logout everyone who was detected using adblock.

Yes lets censor everyone, I think theymos should let the ABP block the ads, and just let it be. Theymos is sitting on a lot of money for the forum I don't see the problem. Plus who cares if butterfly labs or ripples is a scam which both are not. So he lets false ads, why can't we have the power to block those?

Do the advertisers pay premium for the anti-ABP code?

Actually, ABP charges money to unblock ads. You have to be considered non intrusive AND pay em.

If you don't want posts censored, you need to disable ABP (or just these filters) on bitcointalk.org.

I recommend using http://www.ghostery.com/ instead of adblock anyway. It blocks most of shitty 3rd party spying codes - that includes most ads but also Facebook, Twitter, Google and lot of other tracking codes from even more evil companies. It blocks most ads that adblock blocks, but is much, much better for your privacy. It also doesn't block any in-house ads like these on bitcointalk.org.

As for the ABP issue, I second the opinion that it is a side effect of anti-ABP code. I would remove this code and let ABP do their job the easy way. I also like the idea to logout everyone who was detected using adblock. That should keep number of lost ad displays reasonably low (limited to visitors using ABP and not logged in; and huge forums are hard to use without logging in).

You're confusing AdBlock with AdBlock Plus. AdBlock hasn't and isn't blocking the forum ads.

AdBlock does this as well if you add the following filter list:

Code:
http://monzta.maltekraus.de/adblock_social.txt

Blocking all the social network spam that appears on some pages is the only reason I ever installed it.

I am not. I was referring to a category of products writing “adblock” in lowercase. I recommend Ghostery over AdBlock and over AdBlock Plus and over any other adblock (that is over any software focused on blocking ads that are visible).

It blocks most of shitty 3rd party spying codes - that includes most ads but also Facebook, Twitter, Google and lot of other tracking codes from even more evil companies.

AdBlock does this as well if you add the following filter list:

Code:
http://monzta.maltekraus.de/adblock_social.txt

Blocking all the social network spam that appears on some pages is the only reason I ever installed it.

Social stuff is just one category of shitty spies. Ghostery blocks also ~300 different beacons (codes that are “quiet”, that is they don't display anything and their sole purpose is to track users: these are conversion pixels, audience segmentation pixels, etc), plus ~260 different analytics codes, etc. It also blocks ~200 social widgets (which seems to be much more than this short AdBlock social list) and ~700 advertising providers.

I don't claim that adblocks don't have their lists covering these categories. I just think that adblocks are more effective for things that are visible and Ghostery is more effective for things that are tracking you, regardless of their visual effects (or lack of them). I prefer “doesn't matter if it shines or whistles, if it's a 3rd party that is tracking anything, we block them” philosophy over “if it displays something like ads, we block it” because the former fits more into my privacy needs and I suspect the latter is focused more on things that are visible and doesn't block all these invisible data gathering trackers.

Ads like these on bitcointalk.org totally don't bother me at all, as opposed to all companies in the business of gathering, processing and selling as much data on people as they can.

Non-intrusive would be the way to go for theymos and advertisers.
https://adblockplus.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=9281#p55156

I knew this from the beginning of ghostery. I would not touch ghostery with a ten foot poll.

Please research before you use ghostery.

(I know this is getting off-topic, but) I couldn't find anything wrong in what you've linked. I know about their GhostRank reporting and I have it disabled, but I think it should be harmless even if enabled. What's wrong with Ghostery?

TradeFortress's comment is true but misleading. From what I've read and what the Adblock Plus people say about it, only the really large companies are asked to pay to be added to the list and they still have to meet all the criteria. That still makes it pretty shady but a lot less than just saying that you have to pay to get on that list.

You can also disable adblock plus "override" for non-intrusive ads.

In the options:

I came up with a way to cleanly bypass this in Firefox with JavaScript (not yet implemented), but not Chrome yet. Does anyone know how to detect whether ABP blocked a particular element in Chrome using JavaScript?

I would just logout everyone who was detected using adblock.

Too many people would be driven away from the forum if I did that.

I actually don't care about the ads that much. The forum's income is much higher than necessary for its survival, and the ads probably aren't necessary for executing the forum's mission (though they help). But:
- If we're selling ads, I want them to be as effective as possible (without being annoying).
- I want the ad impression stats to be accurate.
- I'm annoyed that some people seem to think that all websites should just silently "take it" when their ads are blocked, or seek permission from the ABP organization if they want to keep displaying ads. I'm not going to do that. If EasyList wants to block the forum's ads, they're going to have to work for it.
- I'm now very irritated that EasyList maintainers fucked up the forum just to block a few unobtrusive links.

And what if the JS becomes blocked?

I find this behavior very similar to jailbreaking and Apple's cat and mouse game. Focusing this much effort just to display ads on a forum about an open source cryptocurrency.

I'm pretty sure that the EasyList maintainers are reading these posts, and will keep fighting your measures while causing a percent of users to think the server's fucked up.

Yet you accept slander for ads, and now your upset over the blocking of those? Really? Come on, as you even said the survival of the forum has nothing to do with ads, so who cares about the slander you let thru and now you have a problem with people blocking them yet you still do it. I would glad turn my ABP off if you didn't allow slander but I am sorry I don't want to be subjected to those LIES and SLANDER!

EasyList Maintainer and Ad Blocker Plus if your reading this put up a bitcoin donation address and I will make sure you guys are well taken care as long I as see no ads on this forum Wink

Show me the bitcointalk.org forum advertisement that said "Ripple is a scam". You can't because I never wrote an ad that says "ripple is a scam" for bitcointalk. When it is in my signature, it's obviously my opinion. Either way, we're pretty off topic by now.
