There are few smart devices that actually connect through wireless or Bluetooth, like a smart watch, smart wallet, etc.
Which makes the users as a target for this kind of hack attempt, just another step to crack down your smartphone.
There are many people who using online wallet such as blockchain, breadwallet or electrum in their smartphones.
That's why this information is a good warn for everyone who using some connected smart devices.

If you just leave your bluetooth turned on then it would give you higher risk, also you should change your bluetooth settings and require some passcodes before pairing. It's my first time hearing about a virus via bluetooth but I don't think it is impossible. Anyway we should all check our connectivity settings and make sure it is on private for safety precautions.

I use it because sometimes I use a bluetooth headphones. Not just to send files but conect machines

Stop using anecdotal evidence.  There are billions of Bluetooth-compatible devices all over the world, and loads of them are left on.

If this is a problem that gets exploited to access a significant amount of these devices, it would be a ridiculously large security vulnerability which would hinder the development of further technology for years to come.

Personally, I use Bluetooth regularly for music in cars and I have a crypto wallet on my phone (not Bitcoin).

File transfer is the least common reasons people use Bluetooth.
Headphones, speakers, smartwatches, car radios, fitness trackers, TVs are what people use that requires an active Bluetooth connection, and there are MANY people who use such devices.

Ever heard of blutooth headphones, car stereos, tvs, smart watches ? WELCOME THEN.

No one uses blutooth for file transfer is acceptable but saying that no one uses it at all is meaningless.
I'm one of the people who uses Blutooth on a  daily basis to connect to my car stereo every single day when I'm out.

The fact that Blutooth  is getting hacked or virsued is kinda wierd to me because its only job is to receive files or send them with your permissions. It doesn't have like absolute control of anything. So how does exploiting it give hackers/thieves access to my stuff

Well if this actually becomes a thing then it won't be only things connected to the internet that are vulnerable but anything that has a channel open with any surrounding electronic environment.

this is something crazy, i've watched her video. with just a few seconds a person can control our android. I can not imagine if this happens and can directly steal important data stored.

Indeed there are also a few speaker that is powered by bluetooth. We still need to be very careful and avoid using those mostly in a crowded places or outside our places.

You are the missing the point that this virus can spread from device to device through air (Signals). Even when not set to discoverable mode BlueBorne vulnerability allows hackers to gain access to your Bluetooth-enabled device. That's scary. It sounds like a major scale hack can be carried out with this BlueBorne virus.

If exploited, the vulnerabilities could enable an attacker to take over devices, spread malware, or establish a ‘man-in-the-middle’ to gain access to critical data and networks without user interaction,” according to the company. “The attack does not require the targeted device to be paired to the attacker’s device, or even to be set on discoverable mode… since the Bluetooth process has high privileges on all operating systems, exploiting it provides virtually full control over the device.

I don't think it's a new way? Rather than calling it something that hackers made, it's instead (probably) a vulnerability that they were able to find and take advantage of (though tbh, most hacks are, the other being socially engineered instead of taking advantage of vulnerabilities). Well, I'd reckon a patch/fix is most likely in the way, so until then, you should simply follow and turn off Bluetooth. Hackers only take advantage of vulnerabilities or the gullibility of the user after all, so imo if you're clear on those two sides, you're pretty safe from being hacked (though honestly, we don't have control over the former since we use a lot of apps made by companies, and THEY are the ones responsible for managing the vulnerabilities)

So since this is a 2017 thread, I can tell you that the fix has been known for a long time, although for some older devices that fix has never been released. Therefore, anyone who has a very old device with BT should check if their device is still vulnerable.

That's cold Bro  and you are right, I believe most people connect via Bluetooth even more now with most of the devices we have now. Even now that I am making this post, I have my earpods on connected to my PC for music, and let's not mention again all devices already listed by others. I hope this issue has been looked into.

I always have Bluetooth turned off. I don’t like being in a public area & my phone being accessible/visible by anybody else. I suggest to follow the OP & turn yours off.
