is p2pool coin specific or algo specific

I've successfully set up dash and litecoin p2pools (still in testing, non production yet). Please help me understand: if I download some other coin wallet and redirect my dash p2pool to a different X11 coin will that work? Or do I need to get p2pool source modified specifically for a particular coin?
