TE-FOOD is quite different from modum. As they write: "The modum sensors record environmental conditions during shipments".

So modum is a generalist, sector independent sensor based tool to track the environmental conditions of shipments.

TE-FOOD is focusing on livestock and fresh food traceability with all logistical and food safety related information. Logging the temperature, location, humidity of transported foods is a part of this process.

Our target markets are also more specific, we are focusing on emerging countries.

At first the idea seemed a little silly, I mean, who's going to use blockchain to track live stock and all. The current system seems fine. But reading it more  I guess it could be something useful for the live stock industry if tracking a pig can cost just a dollar.

How much does the tracking cost that industry in it's current form?

Using blockchain in livestock tracking has more advantages. Maybe the most important is that a blockchain based ledger is incorruptible, unalterable. Livestock trading is fulll with abuses and frauds all over the world. Using a system which is fed by data by people and sensors and the data can be read, but not altered later means more credibility for the supply chain and the consumers.

Using blockchain for contracting and payment within the supply chain means further advantages, but these are the areas which are much harder for supply chain participants to accept, so a careful planning is needed on how to implement them.

Tracking costs vary in different industries and technologies. For cattles in the USA, RFID ear tag based traceability costs start at $2-5, and this is not a whole chain traceability cost, but just the farmer's cost. We are by far cheaper than that.

I think it is good to have a tracability of livestock. Do you imagine, they won't be able to falsify the expiration date of the meat they are selling? (Maybe they still can, but it will be more difficult and it will be easier to detect)
And you will be able to know the place of origine of the livestock. If there was a virus epidemic. It will be more easier to locate it and destroy the epidemic. So i think it can only be beneficial for everyone. But it needs to be seriously done.

You are right, a strong advantage for the supply chain that in case of epidemic, the source of their fresh food products can be checked within minutes, and perform a targeted recall. Currently it takes weeks through trade receipts and delivery notes, that's why wholesalers and retailers have to make recalls in large-scale, because they don't know which part of their inventory came from the specific farms.

From one side, you are right, in case of country-wide implementation, the access to specific data can be an issue for the customer. To solve this, we have quite extensive functions for setting which data can be publicly available.

But TE-FOOD is, and can be implemented by private companies as well, to trace the source of the food they produce/sell.

When your food is tracked:

• In case of epidemic on a farm/region, supply chain members can separate the fresh food from that specific area in minutes, instead of weeks
• You, as a customer, can check all historical details of the fresh food you bought
• You, as a customer can look for fresh food which is originated from a specific farm you trust, but you didin't have this information earlier
• Supply chain participants can avoid redundant activities (e.g. tagging the animals, double antibiotics use, etc.)
• A lot of food frauds can be mitigated, e.g. water-pumping the livestock to gain weight
• etc.

Yes, we know Ambrosus, they have a good team.

There are some differences between Ambrosus and TE-FOOD.

• Ambrosus is a general food traceability platform, while TE-FOOD is livestock and fresh food specialist.
• Ambrosus targets the whole world, while TE-FOOD is focused on emerging countries
• According to our experience, we are less visionaries and more pragmatists than Ambrosus
• We think that technology is very important, but implementation methodology is more crucial in the success of a traceability project
• We have a working solution, used daily by tens of thousands of people

But overall, given our different strengths, we see Ambrosus more like a potential partner in the future, rather than a competitor.
