I'm new to ICOs. I've bought into about 8 now and some release the coins right away, others I have to wait until the end of the ICO to get my coins, and ICOs I have to wait several weeks after the end of the ICO to get my coins (so they say).
Can someone please explain why they do that? Why not just give everyone the coins they buy right away, like some ICOs? And why does it take weeks after the end of an ICO to send coins? I don't get it.

ICO's have different systems and use different blockchains for distribution and storage. They might do it manually which takes some time or they might have certain bonus actions that consumes time for them to keep track of everything. There can be a variety of reasons. If you're unsure or are expecting overdue coins then best is to contact them trough slack, e-mail or telegraph. Maybe they have a discord channel. Go pay them a visit and request for an admin and ask him/her to sort it out!

They will schedule the distribution after the ICO's, also if they give you now, you can exchange it since it is not yet ready on some exchanges. Just wait until the ICO's finishes and they finalize all the token to be distributed.

I'm currious what ICOs that you join? Before take a part of ICO you must read the details about the project so there is no miss understanding between the team and the investor. Many ICO have different ways to distribution the coins, just back read the details or usually in whitepaper already contained everything.

Thanks for the help, but I still don't understand why. I don't recall which one, I would have to look it up, but one sent me my coins right away, so I know it is possible. Most of the others ICO don't do that. They make you wait. Why? I've read a bunch of whitepapers and I've never seen anyone explain the reasons why I have to wait.

I don't really want to list out all the ICOs I've joined. But I've joined several of the most popular ones. I was not as careful in the beginning but I am much more careful now. I read and study everything they on their website and the whitepapers. I research he teams and read comments from people. I look for a solid business plan that will work, a strong team I trust, and nothing that needs some crazy new invention to work. Blockchain is so advanced, we have plenty of ways to use it already, we don't need a bunch of new inventions, we need to use all the great inventions we already have. The whitepapers do not explain everything. Sometimes they go into way too much details on topics that don't matter at all to me and don't answer the basic questions like...why should I choose you over another ICO? It can't just be that the idea is cool. It has to be bigger than that. I like projects that will reach a new audience.

I think there are several reasons why an ICO may not release their coins right away and they are in no particular order -unfinished product -tokens are not transferable until X date (smart contract) -build hype -outlined in WP -no exchange listings right away For example, IOTA had an ICO but did not hit exchanges for 2 years. I wasnt around then, but I could imagine what the feels would be like there. For roughly 2 years, no exchanges and all you could do was OTC trading. So if all you have to do is wait for your coins thats not a big deal. Just read what your getting into first so there are no surprises later on.

Hi thanks for this, but only some of those are reasons. Reason: -unfinished product -build hype These are not reasons: -tokens are not transferable until X date (smart contract) <-this just means they purposefully wanted to hold on to the coins...does not address why.-outlined in WP <-this just means they told everyone they would not give out the coins right away...does not address why.I don't understand why this would matter: -no exchange listings right away <-how does this justify not releasing the coins right away?

First of all you must read all the things that have to do when you bought a coin in an ICO.. They dont give it right away cause you cant exchange it yet so you must wait until the end of the ICO., then they will announce what exchanger will be available for coins then after that they must give your bought coins . So you can now exchange your coins that has been available in the given exchanger. Just be patient.

you should dig more information about the ICO provisions that you follow. Indeed, sometimes there are obstacles that they face about the distribution. which you must guard is communication with the team intensively.

Projects vary. They differ from one another. Some are having the technique of giving the tokens immediately, some will schedule for the distribution within a single or couple of weeks after ICOs to avoid dumping. Some are just made up of devs that move very slowly. They are a pain in the ass.

So, would you say it is better to join an ICO that gives you coins as soon as you buy them? Or, would you rather buy into an ICO that waits to give them out at the end, or over a few weeks to avoid dumping?

1World Online has set a goal of 5 million tokens during presale. If that goal is not reached, all funds received will be refunded. They are currently being help in escrow. This is just an example of how some ICOs would do it. Perhaps this explains why some companies wouldn't give you your coins right away.

Every ICO has it stated how they deploy their coins and you shouldn't really invest in the ones you're not comfortable with. I understand that you didn't search or read and you'll be careful in the future but the title is a bit sensationalist because it sounds like someone stole or tricked people when usually this sort of information is right in the whitepapers or on the websites you invest in.
As to why some do it one way or the other, it just depends on how the devs choose to build their contracts/ICO/business model...

It does really work on that way. Some ICO would directly give your coins on the time you do purchase, some may give after the ICO ends and sometimes distribution would happen when it is already on exchanges. It does depend on the owner/dev team on when they would give those tokens therefore theres nothing to be surprised off since things do normally happen on this field.

Might take some time until they release a wallet and you can withdraw your coins. Better be really careful when you invest in an ICO.

I think that there are only few ICOs that send their token payouts during the ICO, usually they send after the ICO. I think that it takes a lot of time to distribute tokens especially if all tokens are distributed manually. Remember that it depends on the technology the project is built on, some technologies allow automatic distribution whereas some don't. I think when you invest in ICOs, you shouldn't rush your coins since you will end up receiving them, as long as your payment was successful. Besides even if they give you during the ICO, you will find the coin is only getting listed after a few months, which means that you will have to stare at your coins all day until it get listed. So be patient, you will get them.

Some ICOs lock tokens do it doesn't crash directly on the market. Some lock because blockchain isn't in place yet. Its best to be patient and follow the team.

Some icos or projetcs can make the system to process automatically like what already happened if you are trying to use the smartcontract as the main contract crowdsale. There are some reasons behind it and you can try to ask the developers regarding your curiosity
