According to NIST and ECRYPT II, the cryptographic algorithms used in Bitcoin are expected to be strong until at least 2030. (After that, it will not be too difficult to transition to different algorithms.)

Actually bittrex is the best exchange for trading altcoins. There are different exchanges too, but Bittrex was never hacked, they solve issues pretty fast (even if they appeared at all) and so on.
You can check existing exchanges here.

Big volume exchange

-poloniex

Smaller guys, but still reliable in my eyes

-cryptopia
-liqui
-livecoin
-novaexchange
-bleutrade

But yeah bittrex is probably the best and safest exchange around. It is personally #1 in my books and if I can trade a coin there, I will trade a coin there.

You could take also yobit to the list, although Bittrex is for me one of the most trustable exchanger, I know. On exchangers like yobit or novaexchange I would only trade with little amounts.

You should check the following list below:

These are just a few of the exchanges that have a good volume of altcoins stored in their markets. Check them out if you want. I also recommend you to check altcoin exchange here. It is a newly launched cryptocurrency exchange platform that focuses mainly on altcoin trading.

Now that Bittrex doesn't accept US customers, Binance is a good option for altcoins.  I've been looking for a good exchange, and the volume on this exchange seems pretty good.  It's likely you'll save compared to non-exchange sites like Shapeshift and Changelly.  This is my referral link, if you care to join: https://www.binance.com/?ref=12223775

Binance and Etherdelta are the best alternatives to bittrex for now.
I don't really trust poloniex anymore. Also usd exchanges are good kraken etc.

Cryptopia is similar to Bittrex, because there are also many cryptocurrencies listed. The trading volumen is high and there is also a nice arbitrage section, where you can comopare the prices of many coins on different exchangers. Withdrawals and deposits worked smooth and the security of this exchanger is high.
