I just purchased the Sapphire 7970. Overclocked to 1,000mhz with AMD powertune with BOOST (whatever that means ..can anyone explain?) with a view to mining.

In the Philippines there are no 7990's so this 7970 cost approx US$450. There are few miners here so there is no local source that can offer advice.

1 what mhash should I get from this as it stands?

2 What improvement could I get from it and what should I do to get this improvement?

3 By altering factory settings does it bring other problems , like more frequent crashing?

thanks for any help

You can find more information about the 7970 here: http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/graphics/7000/7970ghz/Pages/radeon-7970GHz.aspx

Sapphire makes 8 different models of the 7970. I'm going to guess that you have one like this: http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?cid=1&gid=3&sgid=1157&pid=1481&psn=&lid=1&leg=0

1: That will depend on your drivers, but expect around 600MH/s at the stock 1000MHz clocks.

2: You can improve it by using CGMiner to overclock and manage your fan speed. Use these settings:
Code:
--auto-fan --auto-gpu --temp-target 70 --gpu-fan 40-85 --gpu-memdiff -150 --gpu-engine 500-1100 -I 7 --url YOUR_POOL_HERE:3333 --userpass USER:PASSWORD

3: Overclocking will bring more heat, and if you overclock too far, it will crash. If that happens, just decrease your overclock.

I'm running my 7970 at 1200MHz, and I get ~720MH/s.

.Yes that's the exact unit.

I just found a thread that posts hash rates so based on that I would expect a rate of 700-730 mhash for this model without over stressing it.

Mining litecoin and BTC are a little different when it comes to rates. I run my air cooled at 1150 mhz at 76 celsius and doing 680 mhash

The most that I can get out of my Sapphires is 660Mh/s.  My Gigabytes will run up to 675 - 690 Mh/s.

Typical rule of thumb for bitcoin mining is:  .6 * Clock Speed in MHz =  Hash rate

Example:  .6 * 1000MHz = 660MH/s
