I'm using an older macbook pro, but electricity consumption isn't really a concern. are there any coins that I can mine? or would it be a waste of time without a dedicated mining rig?

Why put so much stress on your old macbook ? It is not going to bring you any interesting profit. If electricity is not really a big deal for you, go and get one dedicated rig for yourself. |

I think that any business need to do well or not do it at all. If you are unable to purchase yourself from expensive equipment, then start mining on the GPU and gradually increase the number of the GPU. This will be a more effective method.

Yeah, it would be a waste of time. Sorry. You would get less than cents a day, and it would probably use most of it on power. If you want to mine, you've gotta go big and get an Antminer S9

Note the S9 and T9 as well as pretty much any modern miner in production are about as loud as having a vacuum cleaner on full blast constantly. GPUs are a quiet option, with long ROI (1yr for some latest gen GPUs at my electric cost, $.06/kw iirc). I'd just buy some coins and HODL.
Temps are going to be your enemy with laptop mining, and the fans on a MacBook aren't designed to be on 24/7 365. GPU and CPU mining work best on desktop units, and you're really just shortening the life of your laptop by mining with it. Best to use it for regular use cases.

Please take note that laptop is not designed for good air ventilation, it is meant for portability. So, heat might kill your laptop component, it is better to avoid suicide action  |

Laptops are not design for mining, unless you do this only for an experimental then you can try it, however you can do only CPU mine and I guess its not easy for an IOS to do this, though I am not sure of it, I only do Linux and Windows OS mining. you could try XMR for CPU mining, as the first note you can do this for experimental as you could possibly fry your laptop for mining 24x7. |

If you are going to use a laptop, do so smartly. Make sure it is sitting on a cool surface (not a blanket, your lap, etc.) and make sure it has some ventilation (even if you prop it off the ground a bit to allow cool air to come in from underneath.
As others have said, it may damage the laptop but I know from experience, business grade laptops fear far better than cheap plastic consumer ones which overheat as soon as they start doing anything intensive. I had a Dell E4320 running 100% CPU in an office for about 12 months without issue during a test.

I'm not sure if there's a smart way to mining on a laptop. The performance simply isn't there even if you are able to do it in a way that does minimal harm to the laptop over time. |
