I would like to know which is the best cryptocurrency exchange. I am currently using bittrex but it doesn't have much coins listed in it. Which are the other good alternatives?

Despite poloniex having a large volume, it doesn't have that much many coins but the coins listed there are good and you just need to choose what you want and no need for many shitcoins.. Try yobit. Or search at google for more.

I am currently using bittrex but it doesn't have much coins listed in it.

Bittrex is one of the best exchanges in terms of number of supported cryptocurrencies. It supports ALOT of cryptocurrencies, what more are you looking for? Tongue  If you're looking for certain cryptocurrencies, head over to https://coinmarketcap.com/ and search for the coin you're looking for, then click on the "Market" tab so you know what exchanges you can purchase them on.

You need to decide what currency(s) you want to trade and then to make a decision.

Most of my colleagues that are buying/trading crypto are using Bittrex and Kraken because of large variety of different coins.
I am trading on Bitstamp because at the moment I have interest only in bitcoin and consider it to be reliable exchange.

There are so many reputable altcoin/bitcoin exchange by now currently my favorite is Bittrex like you've already mentioned one of the very trusted Im using it for almost a year and I got no problems so far I also tried Poloniex although I have no bad experiences on this exchange but I can see a lot of scam accusations lately because of some delayed withdrawals, missing deposits etc, Crytopia is also a good exchange as long as Liqui exchnge using it for some months but fee is much higher than others, You can also try a decentralized exchange like etherdelta its kinda complicated for first time user of this exchange but if you familiarize it already its awesome exchange this is also one of my favorite.

Bittrex for me is the best, although it might not list every coin which is not a bad thing, it is a solid secure and professional exchange.

If you are more concerned with the amount of coins available then I would suggest Yobit as they list almost everything.

In my opinion bitrex is the currently the best and I am using them for most of my trades. Only when I need to trade some less known altcoin I use cryptopia, yobit, CoinExchange, NovaExchange and even etherdelta for some tokens. But on those other exchencges I never leave to much money.

For trading i recommend Bittrex (best variant) and then Poloniex (their support is not cool).
For exchange to fiat - localbitcoins.

Noob question: do you need to use exchanges like bittrex, yobit etc to convert altcoins to ETH? Or can that be done via Ethereum itself?

To convert regularly for gaining profit - yes, exchange is the most convenient option, if it supports ETH pairs for your altcoins.

Sorry if understood your question not correctly.

Not really for gaining profit (like: trading), I was just thinking of converting multiple currencies to Eth for convenience. Say, if I participate in bounty campaigns and end with many types of tokens in my e-wallet. My understanding is, 99% of those alt. currencies are "custom" eth coin. How would I identify those that do not support ETH pair, and does it mean they potentially cannot be exchanged? I'd appreciate the tip about how to make sure a certain company token is exchangable to at least ETH/BTC, else taking part in a bounty would probably be a waste of time if I can't use that currency anywhere outside their own payment ecosystem... Thanks!

Maybe check Yobit exchange, it has a lot of existing coins and I guess also adds new.

Poloniex has a very user friendly interface. But the support is really bad. My ticket takes mths and yet unresolved. Reply once in abt 2 or 3 weeks but not helping at all. Can’t believe this is the support std for a financial service provider. Doesn’t feels reliable at all. In search for an exchange managed by accountable & reliable team now.

I don't really like Yobit for trading because it doesn't seem very user friendly. I use them just for dice games. For trading, I have used Poloniex and Bitfinex. Both seem good to me as trading platforms and both appear to have good security with 2 factor authentication. They are different in that they have some different coins on them. You probably need to decide which coins you want to trade and see which exchange seems to look the best and easiest to use. Also make sure there aren't a lot of complaints about the site too.

Personally I am using Bittrex and Binance without any issues till now.

I was using Poloniex but the support is too slow and the website is lag. So I am mainly using Poloniex for lending nowadays.
