My grandpa has a Galaxy Tab 2.  He wants to give the game Real Racing 3 a try, but it's not officially supported by the Google Play store.  That's fine - I don't care if it isn't officially supported, I just want to know how I can get the unofficial version installed.

Keep in mind that I only have a little experience with Android/Linux stuff in the first place.  But that's why I'm asking here, because many of you are freaking experts on the stuff.

I spent around an hour reading through various posts about people getting it working, but haven't had any luck myself.  I downloaded an .apk file for the game, but when I clicked on it, it said it couldn't be opened.  When I went to the terminal and tried to open it, same thing.  I can't remember the exact error, my apologies, but it was along the lines of it couldn't be opened.

So my question is, do I have to do some sort of root to be able to open .apk files?  If so, is there a recommended guide for accomplishing this?  Any risk of bricking the tablet if I attempt it?

If it's not a root, then any idea why the tablet won't open the .apk file?

Did you change the settings first to enable android to be able to load apps from unknown sources?

Nope - I had no idea such a thing existed.  I'm assuming I can find out how to do that via google, so I won't ask you to detail the process.

Like I said, I know very little about the Android world.  Wink

It should be in settings/personal/security

And then check the "Unknown Sources" checkbox

Also be cautious in general with android if your Grandfather has a wallet on there. Especially after enabling this.

Hope it works.

Alright, thanks.  Smiley

Nope, he's not a Bitcoiner, so no worries there.
