I already have two 7970's, I've been thinking about picking up 2 more cards. Can I grab 2 7950s and add them to the system without stability/compatibility issues?

Yes cards in a series (7900 series in this case) should be problem free.

Rock on. I knew I could mix crossfire in the same series. I just wasn't sure about two separate crossfires in the same machine.

Appreciate it!

you don't need crossfire for mining.

If you're Crossfiring for mining only, you're doing it wrong.
