I noticed in the digital goods section you can sell bitcointalk forum accounts https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=234.0
?

Doesn't that just promote scamming, deception and spam on the site?

The Bitcoin software, network, and concept is called "Bitcoin" with a capitalized "B". Bitcoin currency units are called "bitcoins" with a lowercase "b" -- this is often abbreviated BTC.

I guess one of the reason why there are still people out there who wants to buy forum accounts is to join signature campaign and as you know, if you are a Newbie, there's only a few or I think none (at this time) who accepts a Newbie rank to join a campaign. Another reason is if someone wants to promote their business (new site, casino, token) and register in this forum, they will start as a Newbie and there's a time limit on when a Newbie can post after a post has been made, so to skip that, they would rather buy an account and lastly, yes to scam people, unfortunately it happens here. They pretend to be around the forum for quite sometime to give the impression that they can be trusted.

In short, yes. The reasoning behind account sales being allowed is that it cannot really be stopped and people will just sell them elsewhere but I'm starting to think we should prohibit their sale here and trash their threads because the majority of people selling them are selling hacked accounts and the rest are likely farming them by shitposting. An even better solution to stop account sales and farming almost 99% would be to remove signatures from ranks/activity. Everyone who joins the forum can only have a basic signature and if you want a bigger Senior or Hero sized one you have to donate to the forum to get one. This will instantly stop account farming and people having dozens to hundreds of accounts and is pretty much the only way I can see to stop the abuse going on here.

Because that is the only verifiable proof that you actually own the account.

I dare you to name 1 other thing / method that could 100% garantuee the ownership of your account, for every user on this site.. There simply isn't.

Moderators and DT2/DT1 do actually tag alot of people who sell accounts, but deleting all those threads wouldn't make a difference.

They would simply sell them on another site, as for example hackforums.net, where people might actually think it is allowed / not frowned upon to buy them, ( because sellers usually don't declare that),

while on this one, it seems pretty obvious that it is highly frowned upon (sellers are neg repped etc).

It doesn't matter if they can sell accounts somewhere else, a rule should be made for this forum.  That's a lousy and illogical excuse IMO.  I give negs freely to account dealers, because I'm convinced that such behavior facilitates all sorts of shady things, and I've seen it time and time again.   I also think buying an account is a very lazy way to rank up and helps shitposters to shitpost and abuse signature campaigns.

Why is this allowed here?   Because theymos doesn't give a shit as long as the site gets more traffic and he can earn more money. Those forum donations are a sick joke.

In my opinion, I think the idea of buying accounts ( Legit Ones, not Hacked) is like a investment for some buyers. Because if they buy a Higher Ranking account here like seniors member and up. Buyers can easily gain there investments back and gain profit fast thru just joining signature campaigns, especially if the buyer is fluent in English speaking and writing, and also if they are expert about bitcoins topics, trading, predicting etc. So rather say the reason for me is money.

So your solution is to cure the symptoms of the account farming?

I do agree that this is a big problem that needs to be dealt with, but by simple banning threads of sellers, you're not going to do much, if anything at all if you look at the bigger picture. They will just continue selling them on another modem, as i previously stated.

From an ethical point of view it would probably be correct, but it would only create more misinformation and "chaos" about the selling/buying account rules, and enforcing them.

(You ban bought accounts?)

A smarter thing would be to somehow make account farming / hacking less rewarding, because, lets face it, you're never going to get rid of the people dealing the accounts aslong as it nets them these amounts of money.

Not outlawing something because "they'll just do it elsewhere" is just silly to me.  Imagine if governments used that same excuse--it'd be anarchy.  I don't think theymos wants to ban account sales, scams, sig campaigns, or anything else because those things bring in a lot of money for him, which is unfortunate.  And Lauda has alluded to even darker motives, which I don't doubt.

It's so easy to think that members with green trust are OK to deal with without using an escrow.  It's so easy to just trust them enough....and then you get scammed, and scammers know this, and that's why they buy green-trusted accounts from the likes of QS et al.  I got scammed myself last year, though it hasn't been proven that TimSweat was a bought account.

There is no proof. Some idiots just like to invent conspiracy theories because the logical reason is just too boring and obvious.

Do you want to know the real reason why it takes so long for accounts to get restored? Because there's only two admins who can deal with the issue and only one of them is active in restoring accounts and he's swamped with dozens of requests a day not to mention all the other shit that needs looking into and cleaning up.

After I sent a PM to the individual who is using my account he also sent me a PM saying that he bought it from this
guy : btctalkacc who had told him that it was his account.
I'm going to put down the whole message he sent me :

"I bought this account from the seller account (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=996789), he said that it is his own account, I did not know that the account is hacked, I'm sorry. Now I'm trying to get him to return my money. If I will not return the money, I'll give you back the account, but after I completed the participation in the bounty "Change". So I can to return at least some of my spent of money from the bounty "

I assume the one active admin going through all this is Cyrus? People don't understand what nonsense admins and moderators have to endure ~ they think everyone is sitting at home swimming in time like themselves.

Account recovery is in most cases requested by people looking to enroll themselves in signature campaigns asap, or probably to sell the account later on. It's barely coming from whatever respected and contributing forum members.

From there I am perfectly fine with admins allocating a lower percentage of their precious time to these requests. People have no right to complain ~ they should take care of their stuff more carefully.

I can sympathize with that. Personally, I wasn't enrolled in a signature campaign and the main reason I wanted to recover my original account was to get the hacker's ads off my signature. I gave up after more than a year of being ignored by Theymos. I assumed after that length of time that a Sr Member on the verge of becoming a Hero Member was not worth his time.

Fair enough. I made a new account and life goes on. Maybe I should have contacted Cyrus? Huh

I think it's for companies to post their Ads without waiting months in the forum. Scammers also enjoy it  Grin
