The Bancor Protocol enables high liquidity for Ethereum-based tokens, regardless of trade volume and without relying on exchanges or market makers, and will eventually enable anyone to issue their own Smart Tokens using a simple Web App.
You can try out the live web app for yourself here: https://app.bancor.network/discover

Smart Tokens are different from regular tokens because they hold another digital asset as its “Connector” for the purpose of connecting it to the network for continuous liquidity to other assets in the network. It can be purchased for any of its Connectors and sold for any of its Connectors, directly through the smart contract.

Smart Tokens on the Bancor Network presumably have BNT as their connector token.

You can read more about Smart Tokens here: https://blog.bancor.network/smart-tokens-101-63edc2cc5a89
