The Jalapeno case doesn't allow for a lot of good air flow. When running out of the box I was getting 5.8 - 5.9 when it first started mining and then dropped to 5.6-5.7 Gh/s after it warmed up. Soto increase air flow I did the following: 1. Take apart case 2. Flip top over and put on bottom 3. Flip fan around so that it is blowing down 4. Run screws through fan and plastic spacers into top which is now on bottom 5. Runs cooler and faster now Getting 5.9 - 6.0 Gh/s now Running on Cgminer 3.1.1 Thanks to Sadpandatech for selling me the thing and for the great suggestions.

Wait, so the fan was originally pulling air through the heatsink? BFL engineering excellence right there.

SO this was real product that was shipped not a sale given priority for a PR reason?? IOW - a trickle of jalepenos is actually leaving bfl still - which of course is great news..

Did BFL ship the Jalapeno directly to you? Or rjk had to do forward shipping ?

Wait, so the fan was originally pulling air through the heatsink? BFL engineering excellence right there. Actually it makes sense to pull the heat away from the PCB rather than have hot air blow over it. I suspect the fan may have a poor blade design. The real problem is the casing.

Wait, so the fan was originally pulling air through the heatsink? BFL engineering excellence right there. Actually it makes sense to pull the heat away from the PCB rather than have hot air blow over it. I suspect the fan may have a poor blade design. The real problem is the casing. Unfortunately no. You want to increase the air that moves over the entire surface of the heat sink. If you suck, the air will take the shortest path possible through the heat sink blades leaving some surface area with sub-optimal surface flow. If you blow air, it forces air into every nook and cranny of the heat sink increasing airflow over the entire surface. Proper heat sink blade design will prevent back-pressure and eddies. An exception would be ducted heat sinks that have a clear input to output flow design, but that isn't what we have here. The casing is indeed strange. More thought was given to style than function.

Grats on actually receiving one!
What's the other BFL units in the picture, FPGA?
I noticed there are 5 HW errors in that photo. Might want to look into that.

I a convinced that with firmware updates and proper cooling you can push these past 7 GH/s. I am totally drunk now but I hope to elaborate tomorrow, and if nothing else when I receive my Jala. I wish you the best on your DYI hacks! Also: If you would want to try it out, I have a few high quality CPU fans (thermaltake) and water cooling components I would be happy to send you if you want to experiment more. I wouldn't worry about charging you for them, just for you to cover shipping. IF you are in the US, PM me!
