It's an interesting alternative to monetization via advertisements, but like online ads many people will simply block the mining scripts sooner or later. In addition to that with current cryptos you can expect the mining income to gradually diminish since browser-mining is likely to not keep up with the difficulty increase caused by the ever improving hardware in dedicated mining rigs. So to me it doesn't look long-term sustainable, but it could lead to an interesting direction if improved upon.

To clarify, browser mining in this case serves the website you are visiting, not yourself. It's an alternative way of income for websites, in that you "pay" the website with CPU cycles instead of your privacy as exploited by ads.

It is not a new way of people mining coins for themselves, albeit there have been advances in that direction as well.

As I saw on subreddit and Pirate Bay official forum, not all users were happy about the their new scheme, but many saw it as an improvement over ads. The one complaint uniting users, however, was that the Pirate Bay admins could have been more forthcoming about the browser miner.
Assuming that user consent is obtained, the issue ultimately boils down to whether users would prefer to pay for free web services with their privacy, or a few more cycles on their CPU. But no matter what, there's no such thing as a free lunch on the internet.

Not Bitcoin, but Monero. The latter being much more profitable to mine on a CPU.

Nonetheless it appears to have just been a testrun, so its unsure whether they'll use it long term.

I agree on your statements as regards the indefiniteness of Bitcoins or cryptocurrencies in general. There is a lot to be discussed in terms of the business mechanics (business model) of Bitcoins mainly because of its highly contextual nature. It is very much theorized and criticized thus the attention it receives up to today. And, so far as mining is concerned, it exists because Bitcoins exist. It is dependent to it. Thus, we cannot just separate both subjects especially so one cannot effectively sustain without the other.

most of theses sites use coinhive which mines monero and converts to bitcoin. so difficulty is not important unless the price of monero goes up and it gets more adoption. i've tested this out on coin pot.  with the bitcoingpu fork we could see more sites mining within the year

Good luck to who ever implements this as a money system. A hacker could change your wallet address easily.

That is crazy. To me that's no different that injecting code, or using the old java exploits to auto run installations. Especially since they were doing it unbeknownst to the users. More like future sentencing, rather than future of mining.

Monero's difficulty will also increase over time as new hardware enters the market. Native mining software is able to use hardware more effectively than browser-based mining scripts. This means browser-based mining is likely not able to keep up with new GPUs entering Monero mining. The same is true for other alts, albeit some may be more GPU-resistant than others.

Whether CPU/GPU friendly Bitcoin forks such as Bitcoin Gold gain a meaningful market share remains to be seen.

And what I think is not mining is dependent on it rather bitcoin is solely dependent of mining. The system which is running throughout the world and we have seen the mind-blowing response of people and the fame bitcoin just got. These all are the results from mining, if there is no mining no bitcoin can survive and everything just get to zero.
