I just discovered the possibility of browser mining and Nimiq has received quite a bit of buzz. However, it isn't actually live yet. Are there currently (trustworthy) alternatives?

Are you speaking about bitcoin cloud mining. If I am right. You are moving towards the wrong way and you will loose all your money in the buying hash rate from the network pools.
I suggest you purchase the multiple graphic cards to start the mining altcoins. I hope you can make decent income with the commercial rental electricity charge too.

So far I haven't seen anything that looks promising as to what Nimiq had already laid on the table. I'm still uncertain as to how can a single entity obtain the coins by just opening the browser, but I do have a clearer picture on what the browsers work will be. SHA-256 would be the testnet mining algorithm but it's due to change since SHA-256 leads to centralize mining in the long run (bitcoin). It could be good, though Argon2 and ETHash are the primary candidates for the PoW algorithm that they're going to use so it will still require a GPU-rig setup.

Yes alternatives are there but we should consider the possibility of earning enough with our browser. I mean I can't believe that why browser mining has got so much popular suddenly since last week.

The most hype got from the freebitco.in recently popping up the news on screen. You just have to push that start button after making the settings for core selection and there you can start minding right away.

I even tried doing that from the smartphone browser which gave me 5 H/s of hash rate. That's just crazy. But devices are heating up very fast so I don't think that it is worth doing it as we may crash the systems in first place. You can try freebitco anyway.

According to their whitepaper, the browser will serve as a node rather than a machine for mining. In their testnet, SHA-256 would be utilized to create test tokens, which means ASICs would be the king here. After the network is deployed and the mainnet is fully functional, they would switch to either Argos2 or ETHash to mine the actual coins, so GPU would be the most viable hardware to acquire.

It would still be a hefty investment if you want to mine it though, but utilizing your browser to be a node is a cool implementation nonetheless.

I've been looking into Nimiq before their ICO. And decided not to participate. It sounds interesting at first glance everyone having a smart phone would have chance to mine and earn some money, because every smartphone can run a web browser. For mining on a phone a lightweight client that doesn't need powerful hardware is needed. But what's the point of this client running in a browser. It could just as well run as a background process on the phone all the time, making you potentially more money compared to Nimiq where one must open a tab in a browser with the Nimiq mining page to start mining manually. And every time one closes his browser mining strops. So I don't see anything really useful in Nimiq browser mining. Mining or running nodes on phones could and should be solved in better way.

The Pirate Bay — .......has been caught running a cryptocurrency miner on some pages.

"Has been caught" might be strong.  They announced they were doing that as a way to maintain income and be able to eliminate all of the porn sites that are normally on the page.    If you use TPB, Id rather loan them a few cpu cycles for 10 minutes while on the site than have to sift through all the click-bait and porn ads.

Previously I was tried to used minergate web miner but now that system is closed and I also looking for this browser mining or web miner so I can run it on VPS.

Coinhive seems to work on all browsers, but it has terrible performance on IE.

Even safari on iPhone is quite effective.

But I hope that when more and more websites implements miners they turn it off for mobile devices.

That's a good point, but any device that has a browser could also run some mining client in the background all the time the device is on, not just when someone opens the browser. That's why I think it can be done better than using browsers. And even devices that don't have browsers installed (like servers) could still run mining clients.

That depends on how it would be implemented. If it was designed to use CPU heavily than overheating might be a problem. Nimiq doesn't use much CPU so there's no overheating.
