I was just curious if anyone has tried to implement a web browser based coin with something like Javascript. According to this blog post it seems like its very doable to be able to implement Proof of Work. It also seems like someone has implemented a mining program for Bitcoin here in Javascript and OpenGL.

Would be interesting to build a coin around that idea. While it wouldn't stand up to something like Bitcoin it would be nice to have a coin that was really easy to mine using just a browser window.

what exactly do you mean by 'browser based'?
A wallet or miner?

both are possible but not practical...

you can even mine most (if not all) of the coins out there with some hard work to port the miner to javascript.

if the coin is so easy to mine that a browser can do it with ease, then the coin is worthless to mine with a browser...

kind of... a paradox situation here.

in short, it is pointless to create a 'web' based coin.

There are plugins for websites that turn visitors browsers into bitcoin miners for your wallet kinda like a voluntary-ish botnet from your site's traffic. But since Java's latest updates throw warning messages up you can't do this without them knowing it.  I understand your idea isn't really based on that, but the basis for the mining via a browser already exists. Like mega said though if the coin is weak enough for browser/java mining then a botnet will render it useless in no time... unless you could merge browser mine it while looking at porn I don't think it would take off.

It would be more of an experiment with the Bitcoin protocol than an actually coin. The code could be cannibalized for something useful. We have already seen something like BitMessage come out of the Bitcoin idea. Furthermore it could be used as a microcurrency, something that maybe a small group of people could use as a simple exchange system.
