I'm not sure how many people know both Tahoe-LAFS and Bitcoin and want to donate bitcoin-based accounting system. Maybe we should also ask users on tahoe-lafs mailing list and accept pledges in USD (of course with comment that primary currency is bitcoin Wink.

There were already requests to add accounting and also exist draft/idea how to implement that, but nobody started with that. Maybe GSOC student will be more interested if some extra pledge will be here...

Anyway, I'm pledging 100 BTC.

This would be awesome.
But I don't have $700 to devote to the bounty.
So I'll try to work on the coding.
And you could get an actual Tahoe for only 8000BTC!

I have a proposal for how this might be implemented - see http://www.snell-pym.org.uk/archives/2011/05/24/cloud-storage/

I'll pledge 50btc, not specifically for getting tahoe working with bitcoin, but that you can account with it(i.e. measure each users contribution and usage etc.) which would work with anything not just bitcoin.

The accounting system that integrates with Tahoe is really the hard part. It's pretty easy to stick some RPC calls on top of that.

kiba, bitcoin value went up drastically since December. Because nobody is working on this project yet, can I change my offer from 100 BTC to 40 BTC? It is still much higher than original offer (in USD prices). Thanks.

Diskcoin (and bandcoin and cyclecoin and servcoin) is coming soon as I figure out bitcoind code.

Security should be a plugin, not an out of the gate feature. DNS designers had to back off in the early days because corporate sponsors balked at perceived and real development costs.

Decentralization should be done first, quickly, and correctly. Otherwise you'll see no more than niche adoption and to law enforcement niche is not soccer mom, therefore cider terriblist.

Tahoe-LAFS would be a wrapper for diskcoin.

I can bring it.

I just wanted to point out that Open-Transactions could work as the accounting system for a Tahoe-LAFS integration, and in fact such a thing is why I wrote OT in the first place.

I will support anyone who uses OT to do this Tahoe integration.

For extremely old bounties like this, might it be a good idea to reconfirm that the pledgers are still onboard? 210 btc is worth quite a bit of coding now and it would drop to 150 BTC if slush's adjustment were allowed.

I think a digital cash integration with Tahoe is one of the most important projects that needs to be done, regardless of which digital cash system is used to accomplish it.

(I would use OT and Bitcoin together but if you have a better suggestion I'd love to see it.)

How much time do you all think you have, that you can sit on this forum gossiping like a bunch of old women instead of coding something so important?

Who is the more foolish, the fool or the fool who follows him?

It's very odd to necro old threads like this. Better to just start a new one listing your goals or whatnot.

I don't know much about Tahoe-LAFS, but if there's no built-in incentive to provide storage, I'm guessing there's also no built in verification that you're actually storing what you say you are.

If there's an incentive system for providing p2p storage (which is something I really hope to see), there needs to be a very robust verification scheme, otherwise people will fake it for free money. To me this seems an extremely challenging problem, though probably solvable (I did spend some time thinking of some possible solutions).

Whether we use Bitcoin or OT or both or neither for payments is trivial in comparison.
