I think this will help you out https://github.com/blockchain and why would you just do it for fun? There are some developers that are doing it because it's their passion and try to help out the community. if you want to create and draw graphs in order to visualize connections, i can recommend graph-tool as library. i only used it from within python but it is a c++ library and very performant and feature-rich. another popular network library in python which is written in c++ is igraph, also having R bindings.
