I've read about nightmare stories, esp. one about the guy losing 160BTC in his blockchain wallets. Any pointers on how to go about creating a wallet in the securest possible way?

Use Armory to make an offline wallet.

Make paper wallets.

DO NOT use an online wallet.

FYI, blockchain wallets do not generate addresses deterministically.

What do you mean by this?

I guess it was a nightmare because of the amount of $$$/btc involved...for a few bitcoins, it'd be more like a bad dream...I don't know if it's really that bad to use an online wallet if you're world isn't going to end if you lose a few hun $$$...

To make a blockchain.info wallet as secure as possible:

Use two factor authentication.
Use a complex password.
Keep an encrypted backup copy of your wallet somewhere secure (USB in a safe?)
Use the browser extension.
Don't access your wallet from a publicly shared computer.
Don't install any pirated software on your computer.
Be extremely selective about what software you do install/run on your computer.
Don't access any other websites while accessing blockchain.info

If you are looking for something "bullet-proof", then you need to consider either Armory or paper wallets.
