Originally on a Linux box but couldn't get it to work after a few weeks of fiddling around. Now on a windows box.

Bitcoin Core up-to-date.
New install of Armory 96

Armory remains at 'Preparing Database' and remains offline.
In the background there's a popup saying 'ArmoryDB.exe has stopped working'

Here's my log file
https://pastebin.com/zEfQvSph

Any suggestions?

There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, which will follow the rules of the network no matter what miners do. Even if every miner decided to create 1000 bitcoins per block, full nodes would stick to the rules and reject those blocks.

0.96 is a bit old... So I would suggest that you first try upgrading to the latest 0.96.3 release from here: https://github.com/goatpig/BitcoinArmory/releases

or possibly even the 0.96.4 RC1 release...

With 0.96.3, Armory won't even load.

All I get is the ArmoryDB.exe has stopped working popup.

Yeah, that too! Sigh. And nofication keeps popping up that Armory is connected to Bitcoin Core re-established, and stuck at 0% while blockchain number keeps going up and down for no reason.

Would going back to 0.93 cause issues if the wallet was created with 0.96?

You can't go back to 0.93, at least not if it's your online machine. Armory will crash due to lack of SegWit support. (0.93 also won't work for Bcash. Different signing format.) I keep forgetting the minimum required for offline signing with SegWit support.
