Loving the visual guides! Gives an idea for all of us how proper sound insulation should be done and what precautions to take. Overall surprised how much quieter the Avalon 7s are compared to my S7s even without the wind tunnel, 58 decibels should be more than enough for home mining if you put the miners in a basement or garage.

I have been also recently experimenting with silencing the deadly noisy avalons. I have found out that if you live in a cold country ( for example in Sweden now the outside temperature is just 3 degrees), you are lucky and dont need to do much.

Here is what I have done to noise solution: Although avalon 741 has only one fan, you can still be able to put a hose to both sides of the miner, and it makes the fan work a slighty bit higher (in my case only 10 percentage points), but the total noise reduction will be around 20 dBs. The hoses I have used were both fire safe and highly sound-proof, surrounded with extra insulating material (a yellow woolish material with soft texture). I have put the intake hose to outside through a small window to take in cold air, and have put the longer hose to inside to heat my room. The longer the hose, the better the sound-proofing, so its a good idea to put the longer hose to the front of the miner, rather than the backside, because it is farther away from the fan. For further noise reduction, you can tape the small cleavages around the miner fan to reduce noise passing through

I have done a lot with this style  also

10 inch flex duct

your idea of bring in cold air with the duct  lowers temps a lot  what  do your gui numbers look like

here in NJ, USA it has yet to get cold.  It is 82 f  or 28 c .  Once we go to 32f  and 0c  this unit will be 5-10 c cooler and fans will drop more.

how big is the tube you use.  A 10 inch is 25.4 cm  if you use a tube like that  I wonder if it would be better or the same for you

I wanted to go into ASIC mining a couple of months ago, had a Antminer S9 in my basket and filled down my information but then I saw a video on YouTube about the noise they produce. Never thought it would be that loud, so did some tests in my study room with a device that makes an equal amount of noise and found it too loud so I canceled the order. The Avalon seems a little bit more quiet, but still too loud for the apartment I live in. The noise reducing you did seems to be going to the right direction for me. But I just hope that they will produce quieter machines in the future, so an average person can also enjoy ASIC mining.

It will certainly make your avalons quiter, but not enough to sleep in the same room. You can for example put this into your living room instead, with the idea I and philip described above. The problem is always the fan, but it is required to cool these machines down. Thus, your idea of a quiet ASIC machine is not feasible because it makes the miner much expensive, see r4 from bitmain, it has almost the hashrate as avalon but 2 or more times expensive. Water-cooled machines would make it much more expensive.

With this kind of setup perhaps putting the miner in an unused room or garage is most ideal. Basement could also work at this level of sound. The R4 is no longer in production, thankfully- it has horrible reliability and Bitmain charged an unreal markup for lower noise despite the much lower hashrate. If miner manufacturers would put the blades further apart and didn't cram so many into a small container they wouldn't be as loud, but remember their primary target is large farms that don't care about noise.

yes. The s-9 and the Avalon are design to run in a warehouse exshauting the air out

And as lout as possible.  Why is this. Because a small home miner with 1 or 2 or 3 units can bury them.

Wtf am I talking about.

Here goes any home that needs heating with decent power prices can compete with big farms.

So to discourage home mining units are designed as loud as possible.

Mostly to force the home miner out.  My garage build allows me to run 3 Avalon and a few gpu rigs.

And the noise is reduced enough to work.

If you want a unit in your bedroom look at water cooled gpus.

Most of my designs are designed for a home owner except for my small mining rigs.
With gpus. They do not mine btc so I did not mention much about them.

My walls aren't thick enough to block most of the noise. When I watch TV in the living room I still hear it quite loud in my bedroom. I guess I got to wait till water cooling is affordable. Because water cooled mining machines like the R4 don't seem to be worth it at this moment, unless you have free electricity.

The r4 was not watercooled.

But virtually impossible to buy at this moment. I've been looking around and they're either offered by scammy websites, or not at all. I'd say there's a lot bigger market for these things than how many were produced so far.

I was watching the videos, and wasn't sure if I missed something.

What do you have on top of your Avalons between them and the Psu's.

Thanks, I'm buliding a similar box in my basement.

stops shorts lowers sound very fire resistant material that piece  is way more then you need

1 foot by 2 foot  does 3 avalons using 2x 2400 watt psu's

I didn't see this material before, can you guesstimate what the effect is for the sound? Level of sound so to say.

It lsolates the psu from the miners.  Good for shorts. And will not burn.

It does not lower the sound much but I would guess 1db.
I liked the short protection it gives more then the better sound. This is the red rubber pad.  Between the miner and the psu

I mine alt coins with https://simplemining.net...
I see BTC as the super highway and alt coins as taxis and trucks needed to move transactions.

Ah, that makes sense. I've been experimenting with growing peppers inside in a well regulated basically wooden box. I had both the ventilation to refresh the air as ventilation through the box to "force the plants" to grow stronger as I was simulating wind that I wanted to muffle. 1db is still nice though, but I do see, for the mining, the added benefit of preventing shorts Smiley

Hi Phil,

Just wondering is there any reason to use silicone rubber specifically as opposed to a rubber matt you might use in a shop floor or something? Just checking as a these seem to only ship from the US, canada is lacking on options.
