first time building a rig

Hello and thank you for reading this post. I'm looking for some advice. I have decided to build a gpu rig for the first time.

I've got a shopping list at amazon and if you would be so kind to take a look and offer me any advice it would be much appreciated. This is everything which I believe that I need in order to build a decent rig according to my research, but intuition says that I am missing a heat sink and fan for the CPU. This feels like a stupid question but would somebody mind advising if I do or do not require a heat sink and fan?

Any other advice much appreciated as to whether this or that component is sufficient or insufficient to do the job.

Depends on how well ventilated and how cold  your room is. If you are in a cold room, the stock fan that comes with your cpu will be fine. I do suggest buying after market fans that you need to place on your GPUs  though for better circulation.  How many GPUs will you be using initially? If you are starting with two, you can space them out far enough so that they do not generate heat fast.

I would always make a rig with at least 8 GB of RAM and not 4 although 4 should work normally. Also if it is possible for you to upgrade the processor to at least G4400 should be the best option but here too G3900 should do fine also. For the case you have to make an open air frame like the ones in Amazon, best dimensions if you do it yourself for better airflow is 80x40x35 cm, that's what I have and it works perfect with very cool temperatures for the cards at only 65% fans speed.

2xGTX 1070 should give you about 0.0008 btc a day so it is a good start.

All other components looks good to me.

GPU mining is not a good return at this time : it is the perfect time for learning how to do with a little 2 x nVidia GTX 1070 RIG.
When the GPU mining return will be better, you will be ready to go higher and buy 4 other GTX 1070... or more.

Small pic but that looks like x6 1070?  you wont need more than a solid 1000 watt for that rig if you wanna save a few bucks
Course if you wanna maybe upgrade to 1080ti's or something, the 1600 watt will be nice in the future.
The CPU you have picked out will come with a fan/cooler, it's stock one is well fine enough, that CPU wont be mining anyways in that build likely.
Shitty time to be buying 1070's tho man haha, they are like a dollar a day each now :/

Your CPU is not compatible with the motherboard, I'm surprised that no one noticed that.
Just replace it with a Celeron G1850 or Pentium G3260.
You will need DDR3 RAM too instead of DDR4.

all looks good but 8gb and of course cpu you need a LGA1150 CPU or a TB-250 board that is LGA1151

Gigabyte 1070 WindForce is good card. Have two of them: 460-470 sol/s (Equihash), 30-31 Mh/s (Ethash) at 140-150W. But cooling system is not the best. I would prefer Palit JS/SJS/GR, Gyga Extreme. Little bit expensive but quite better cooling

Well right now profit have dropped and are still dropping, you would be lucky to make £8 per day with that setup if not paying for electricity, so would look at over a year to make the money that the setup has cost you back again. You might be better to just invest the money in some coins.

I have 6x 470 setup you could have for £2k 🤣

On whattomine.com what would I enter in the top two lines of boxes. The 480 by default is set to 3 and when I edit this to zero and add 6 in to the 1070 box everything goes to 0.

What am I doing wrong?

I see that 3 is still placed in 480. I'm assuming 480 is a separate graphics card? Doesn't this skew the calculations if it's calculating as 3x 480s and 6x 1070s?

You have to click the graphics card model so it highlights in either Red or Green, only those highlighted are used in the calculations

This is a horrible time to build a "first" rig.  I think this is why GPUs are finally back in stock.  People are building that "first" rig and quickly realize that their 2,ooo.oo rig is only making 10.00 a day and that is quickly falling.  While I don't overclock my 1070, I think with an oc Mike is about right.   With 6 1070s you are going to be near 8.00-9.00 a day.   That is a lot of days till you break even when you subtract electricity. 

Here across the pond we have things like Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace where there is a market for used computer parts.  If I was starting today, I would start with all used gear and get in as cheap as possible.  On most newer boards you can run 4 cards. 

You may want to investigate into used gear which will help you learn with less of an investment and a higher possibility of breaking even so you can start making money.

This is only good for mining altcoins. If you are trying to mine btc, then a GPU mining rig is not right for you. You are 4 years too late for mining btc profitably with a GPU. This rig however is good for mining ETH and XMR.

Just saying, you kind of have to view your rig as sunk cost. Right now it takes about 6 month to make the cost of your rig back. You can always sell it for 70% or turn it into a gaming rig. My 6x GTX 1070 SC2 rig cost me a little short of $4500. I bought it for credit and have 6 month to pay it back. So I kind of hedged myself, where I at least break even in 6 month. So then, I'll make a decision whether to continue mining or not. I am basically saying, that given the large upfront cost, have an exit plan.

Just figure 10-13 months to become profitable at the current market climate. A lot people say it is not profitable at all to mine anymore. This is not really a true statement. It just takes longer to get into the green. Everyone wants to make money now but unless you hit that new coin that makes a ton then it’s going to be a grind. It is possible to become profitable, its just going to take a long time.
