Hello all,

I keep seeing posters reporting their 7950s can hash at 640 @ 200 watts.

I currently have no idea how this is possible.  I can hash at 550 per card @ 585 power draw, which seems extremely high?  Any trick to this?

1.019 v, 10 powertune, 925 core, 1250 clock ~ 585 total

Have one hard drive, a cheap celeron cpu, wifi card and no other peripherals.

Any help always appreciated!

Yeah im having probelms myself breaking 600 and be stable all day with a 7970 : /  Some people have really tweaked their tunes i guess.

what 7970 you using?  max ive gotten on my xfx is 550 then again its a xfx card meh

About your power consumption:
Is the whole rig drawing 585Watts or just the card? What power supply are you using and how efficient is it? An 80% efficient power supply means if your equipment is drawing 480W from the power supply, that power supply will draw up to 600W from the wall. Your cpu, mothboard and wifi, are drawing some power too and its not negligible (about 150-250 W in my experience). I keep this lower by going in the bios settings and turning off the USB 2.0, the SATA controller, the onboard audio (essentially anything that is unnecessary)

About your hashrate problems:
I have a number of 7950s hashing at 600-630...
I use cgminer with the following settings, but not all cards are the same and it may take some fine-tuning:
Engine: 1060-1080Mhz
Memory: 900Mhz
Voltage: 1.188 (you can try for 1.087, but depending on the card's bios and driver, it may not be possible)
Powertune: 0 (increasing powertune allows it to draw more power, if anything you should go negative)
Intensity: 13
You can do this once cgiminer is running in the settings or when you launch it with the following tags:

Cards are stable and temperature stays in the range of 77-79 C

Just another note from someone mining LTC @ 600+ with a 7950: Powertune may help if your cards are backing off.  My cards would get above 600 with powertune unset (defaults to 0), and then back off to 500 after coming up to temp.  After setting powertune to 20, they stay at 600+ all day.  These are sapphires.

Also, suryc, you're mining BTC right?  Those settings won't work well for LTC.  Here's what I use:

Yes, the settings I gave earlier are for BTC mining. I switch back and forth between LTC/BTC with the GPUs depending on conditions, but with difficulty on BTC rising so much, I think I will keep put them on LTC permanently soon.

ralree, your settings for LTC are very similar to what I use, except I the following differences:
intensity: 20, gpu-engine:1050, gpu-memclock:1400, and I also undervolt with gpu-vddc 1.188

for script same thing

intensity 19 give me 580

gotcha,  alright ive been messing around with the settings and have got a stable 580 - 600 khash

According to other forms the wattage is attained by multiplying vddc * vddc current, VOLTS * AMPS.  

All cards have these clocks:
1.019
core: 1000
Mem: 1450
powertune: +10

TC: 21714
Worksize: 256
intensity: 19

first card: 67 C
~600 k/hash
gpu-z reporting 72.5 watts? doesnt seem right

second card: 73C
~600 k/hash
gpu-z reporting 100.89

third card: 77C
~570 k/hash
gpu-z reporting 145 watts


The wattages don't really seem right to me, but I am unsure.  I am also confused as to why the third card is pulling so much less power then the first card as they are pretty comparable in temp.

Also im mining scrypt.

5 x Gigabyte 7970 OC averaging 680mhs per for BTC on cgminer 3.2.0 (sorry, no conf at work):  1000-1145 gpu, 990 mem, 0 powertune, -150 memdiff, 8 intensity, autofan, autogpu, stock voltage

Checkout anything ckolivas has to say about configuring 7970s.  Memory clock should be -150 of engine clock.  Memdiff will do it automatically for you.  Intensity over 8 on win7 causes instability for me.

If you are talking BTC (not LTC), there is no need for MEM clocks to be high. I run 2x 7950 on cgminer with 1150 gpu, 300 mem, +15 powertune, 9 intensity, 0.975 V, 65% fan = 605Mh/s each @ 70-72 C. ~600W on my Kill-a-watt.

(EDIT:  You're not, you're using 7950)  I've found I can't separate the engine from the memory by more than 150.  Ckolivas talks of the same lock for 7970s where 7950s didn't have it. My gigabytes will reset the engine and memory if I try to spread them more than 150.  I've tried, and want to, but it wont let me...  I also haven't cracked the voltage unlock yet.

Use MSI afterburner in overclocking mode (googleit how to modify its config file).  You can set memory to as low as 5 MHz, but 50 MHz was stable for most 79xx cards I've used.

From cgminer gpu_readme:

--gpu-memdiff -125
This setting will modify the memory speed whenever the GPU clock speed is
modified by --auto-gpu. In this example, it will set the memory speed to
be 125 Mhz lower than the GPU speed. This is useful for some cards like the
6970 which normally don't allow a bigger clock speed difference. The 6970 is
known to only allow -125, while the 7970 only allows -150.

You have to go into config to set Unofficial Overclocking to 2.

Without it, the program limits the max difference between memory and core speeds for stability.

So set it to 2. Should allow you to change your voltage also.

Open MSI after burner set Mem to 710.  
Close it
Open MSI after burner set to 410.
Close it
Open MSI after burner set it to 200.
Repeat, etc

Reboot cgminer and check GPU Caps to make sure you are getting the desired results.

Interesting regardless of voltage or engine setting. I find that 805 is optimal memclock for my Sapphire 7950. If I take memclock down to 400 my watts increase by 40w which is roughly 10w per card.
