Of the existing ones, I'd bet only Bitcoin survives. But I'd be really surprised if something doesn't come along and one up Bitcoin eventually with some features that improve on it - harder to steal, less vulnerable to hard drive crashes, etc.

I think PXC has a good chance to survive because there seems to be a lot of plans for it and there hasn't been a massive dump rush either.

yes here is bitcoin forum - all the stuff of different coins ... altcoin #1, #2, #3, #4 etc...
don´t forget there are still more people out there not even heard about bitcoin till now...

i really appreciate the idea of bitcoin. even more stuff is going to change society... so questions are will coins make it ... what are the problems of the different (alt) coins and how could these be improved...

i think we are still in prototype / test and experimental phase

so my answer to this question is any altcoin is great. consider mining as an investment to gather more knowledge for new future businesses.

sure as a newbie you are more likely not to be perfect effective playing the game here. But with each move you make your abilities to make it better next time is growing.

i´m quite new to mining to - lost here - mined feathercoins at diff 13000000(no clou how may 000). dit wdc right now - tried digicoin/hypercoins  today ... not to sure if this is best right now...

who cares ... learned so much the last days ... ok there will come invoice for electricity and i had tho buy graphic cards etc..
but compared to other business and the price you have to pay until you have some kind of clue - it´s really great spot here...

good community,  alot of potential in these business and at least you don´t have to pay for getting knowlege like on alot of schools...

and if you are lucky you make some bucks - and as the weather here  where i live is shitty cold - i have nice warm heated cellar ...

Crypto currencies is are "cute experiments" so far. Bitcoin being the flagship has probably grown larger then it was designed for and should technically be replaced by a 2.0 but its not like you can "switch" now. The others also suffer from the same experimental phase and most if not all will die out rapidly. There might be one or two competitors to bitcoin but none will survive in the long run. I believe there will be more generations of Crypto currencies or even other forms of digital currencies that will replace them.

Perhaps something based on Quantum tech?

go along with that - there will be changes of currencies  - alot of changes - but that´s also part of game 7 business - as i´m  from Europe; i´ve faced also quite a couple of fiat currency changes :-) this happens, it´s normal sometimes you lose - sometimes it fuckes up bankaccount / plans / dreams ...

but what is important to the (alt) coins is that it´s (partly) new concept of how money could work... and how it´s set in sociaty...
to get familiar and fit with how the stuff works here - when handling this kind of money - that´s important.

... as important as to have always enough of what coin / kind of money  when you need it :-)

on the alt / bit coins ... it´s always clever to split it - to make diverse portfolio...

get some of your money to mining equipment, save some of every coin just in case - trade some here trade some there - keep some of the coins that look promising for your kids - sell the rest before it´s to late... put some fiat into the crypto coins casino - take out some wins if you do clever... but always keep in mind although money is said  to make the world go round, it´s just something you have to use and never ends in itself....

back to the altcoins - and which will make it...

what is most important that the idea of having a global working, alternative to the old school kind of money (authorized by  nations / state / government)  is going to last and get´s enough power to make it for the futute...

the rest is selling and buying... and waiting :-)

There is enough room for a good altcoin still. One with a wallet that actually works when solo mining, not just sometimes, as well as less fishy starts. Name one altcoin which had a perfect start without any fishy going on.

Despite a lot of coins being 'superior' to Bitcoin in various aspects, I don't see any of them surviving apart from Bitcoin itself.

Who knows though, it's anyone's bet. I wish I knew which coin was going to be the next 'big thing'; I'm sure I'd be a millionaire in no time!

They have a better chance of surviving if they offer something that makes them easier / better / safer for the non geek to use.
Otherwise better doesn't really matter all that much.

For example Linux has been superior to Windows since at least 1998 but Windows still dominates because Linux still requires a geek factor many simply don't want to learn how to deal with.

That being said Bitcoin has the same problems Linux has, and a lot of the documentation for Bitcoin out on the web is very poorly written and confusing. An alternate currency that invests in quality technical writers has a chance.

I would say Litecoin is showing potential.  However I'm sure we will see hundreds more currencies popping up all over the place once Bitcoin gets going.  By going, I mean taken more seriously like being listed on the London Stock Exchange (rumours).

It's very early to see that far ahead, but the value lies in adoption.  The more a currency becomes widely accepted the bigger it will grow.  Bitcoin is leading at the moment and it's first in the firing line.  It's going to be a while before any major players accept it as a payment type, but BTC will have this advantage. 

Litecoin is secondary in popularity.  Those who have recently jumped on board will see this as something to get on while its not as hot.  Everyone is watching Bitcoin very closely.  The jumps and crashes in value, everything it does will affect crypto currency as a whole.  But being first in the firing line might give the next biggest currency a chance learn from any mistakes BTC makes.

All that aside, cc is here to stay.   Even if it fails as a viable method of payment, the black market's use and reliant on crypto currency will keep it in value.

Litecoin ----> Probable, there are some services, faucets, gambling sites... accepting them.
Ripples ----> Depends if there are sites where I can earn and spend them or not.
Others ----> Depends...

TIP: If you want to increase the usage of your own cryptocurrency, try to set some online wallets. People doesn't want to waste lots of GBs of HDD in "useless" blockchains.

I have seen some faucets, but since I couldn't get a address for these coins, I didn't use them.

I agree with you, if you're starting a cc then you're going to have to facilitate it yourself or hope you're going to have a dedicated, active community.

I think once you get someone that would actually sell a coin of your CC for more than a penny you're major really.
